Robert Heatley Stand / Re: ELIMINATION FINAL : Blues V Tigers (Pre-Game Patter)
Think we should definitely reconsider Casboult's selection - I think, after watching the Swans tonight, I'd prefer to see Duigan back as another midfield rotation who can put his body into the clearances and disputed possessions as well as being an extra defender if needed.

Actually reconsider a ruckman. Our ruckman, compared to those of other clubs, are terrible when up forward.

Nothing surer that of of the 3 will be subbed sometime in the 3rd qtr, probably early in it .

Looking at the game on TV now I 'm thinking we have one tall too many for a highly contested final. Both Sydney and Hawthorn subbed off their ruckmen in  the 3rd qtr. Nothing as sure, barring an injury, that one of our talls will be subbed too at some stage in the 3rd qtr.

Just wondering, with jack, vickers and Edwards, who plays as the 3rd tall?. Just feel andy mac or Duigan need to play

I remember a few years ago we played Geelong, who played Hawkins, JPod and Mooney. We went in seemingly one tall short but we played Walker on one of them. We smashed Geelong that day by 6 goals and part of that Walker killing them running off their static talls. The 3 amigos killed them for pace that day running into an open forward line, alot coming from our run out of defence.

Don't under estimate M Williams there, he will know exactly what is involved as a coach and mentor.
Let's not forget that Choco coached Port to the biggest loss in a VFL/AFL GF - not bad given that the league is over a 100 years old.  What does it say about your ability to get a side up for a final if your side is smashed from the start and ends up losing by 119 points?  Given that they won the PF by 87 points, that's a massive 206 point turnaround in the GF!!!!!!!

Coached his side to a flag too and that side that Port beat by 87pts in tthe PF also lost to Geelong in the QF by 104 pts.

We always do best with one and a back up. More often than not we're sh1t with 2. Doesn't add anything. Diminishes Kreuzer's affect as he is not good up forward. He suddenly becomes average if  he's  not first ruck. Collingwood and Richmond will be the same too. Hawthorn will go with 2 out of necessity with Buddy out, meaning Hale needs to spend more time forward. Hawthorn operate  best with Hale, with back up from Roughhead. Not sure the Swans have been as good playing  2 rucks plus Tippett and White. Why would you do  that when white and Tippett can ruck most proficiently. If you're looking to split  between a bloke who can win a few taps and a bloke who can kick a couple of goals you'd go with the latter.

That is old fashioned thinking, Laj. The Swans go with all the big guys because it is their natural advantage and it works, there is no better game plan or team setup, just a winning team that plays to it's strengths.

Like it or not we have a significant ruck advantage over most clubs that we have greatly failed to capitalise on, it is my opinion that we need to engineer the game plan to suit our strengths. It is pointless playing a marking KPF game plan if we have no marking KPF or if we have to bastardise our backline to try and fashion one! I'd rather see two Amigos up forward with a tackling forward like Armfield or Robinson and a tall like Kreuzer or Casboult inside F50 bringing the ball to ground. In my opinion the best football we played this year was early in the season when we had a series of narrow losses to top four sides. All games had combinations of Kreuzer, Rowe, Hampson and Casboult playing bringing the ball to ground from long fast entries of the HBF by the likes of Walker, Tuohy and Gibbs. In addition opposition rucks were being dominated, and all that happened when our midfield was hopelessly out of form! If we added an in form Yarran running off the HBF to that mix I think it would be our most damaging combination.

I am with @EB1 we need both playing plus Casboult but Casboult's performance will be critical. If he puts in another one like the last two we are shot, he could be our most important player this week.

What applies to other sides doesn't apply to  us.  What's an advantage on one side can be a weakness on the other. With us, if we play too many talls we just get run off as our defensively pressure/ability isn't still what it should be. We kill one ruckman off in a  game when we play two of them .Our strength is in our run, don't see the point of playing a second ruck for the sake of a few taps.

Not sure about old fashioned. Thought playing one ruck plus a back up was pretty normal. Swans we certainly better earlier on in the year with less talls. Hawthorn often use one ruck and Roughead but may get away with playing too simply because of the type of tall Buddy is. They soon sub out Bailey  the moment they lack run though. IF Watson was fit we could play both Henderson and Waite forward. Because of the type of player Waite is then we could play 2 rucks more successfully. Seeing Watson is out though one of Hendo or Waite has to go back meaning I'd prefer Casboult to an extra ruckman. Having a bloke who can take a contested mark forward, given the far more contested nature of finals, is more important than an extra ruck. Our ruckmen are useless up forward. Other side's rucks play forward more proficient than ours.

Personally, I think there is Buckley's hope of you blokes convincing MM to drop SpecialK and retain Casboult or Warnock.

If we go in with only one fit ruckmen, that will be SpecialK by a country mile!

If we go in with one ruckmen that is also a losing strategy, not duplicated by any of the other serious finalists.

Hawks will run with two and Roughead as a 3rd option.
Swans could go with up to four ruck options, counting White playing forward as a ruck option with Tippett returning.
Freo will want to have two plus KPPs.
Geelong four capable ruck options.

I cannot believe you took my earlier question seriously!!!

Kreuzer had 2 kicks and one handball. Nowhere near good enough for four quarters.

So drop Kreuzer and retain Casboult?

If Kreuzer can't play ruck, absolutely. Kreuzer has zero chance of taking a contested mark, never has and never will.

To me, we can only play one ruckman. Two rucks is waste. Watching VFL finals over the last few years Casboult always lifted about 8 notches and looked a real force every time. Be worth seeing if it can happen at the next level.

Which of the ruckmen to go with though? Warnock is another who has lifted hugely when it's come to September, both in ruck work and around  the ground.

Interesting selections this week.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd23 v Port Adelaide.
There's surely no chance of Richmond losing to the scum, therefore if we make the finals Richmond it will be.

Richmond might rest half their side and hope the roos beat the pies so they can play Port rather than the blues or the roos who beat them last time out.

Be alot of incentive for Richmond to "tank" this week. Playing Port at home would be so better for the Tigers than playing North or Carlton.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd23 v Port Adelaide.
No interest in this game whatsoever, pretty sure another loss is coming, hoping like hell the Roos get over the line, then the finals get interesting....and that's how it should be. Any other scenario (i.e. us participating in September) makes our elimination final a joke.

Why does North deserve the chance ahead of us. North made such a habit in choking in close games it almost made  us look good, as that's really, really saying something. Not to mention the fact that we beat North too, On that count specifically your argument doesn't make sense. If we finish higher than North then we deserve to be there. Sure North supporters thoroughly think they deserve to make the finals with 10 wins. We finish "8th" we deserve to be there as we finished above all those other sides contending.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd23 v Port Adelaide.
We're officially 8th now it seems so best we bring our best to the game. After last weeks effort I dare say they'll be contrite enough to put in as they did against Richmond following an insipid loss..

We'd have been ok already if McInnes had've marked instead of punched then compound it by near knocking Simmo our in the last minute. A draw would've been enough as Brisbane will get pumped by Geelong at Skilled Stadium..Been ok already too if we had kicked straight as well. Now we have to win as I reckon North are a good chance to roll the Pies.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 22 : Blues Choke Against Injectors (Anti-Losing Rage)
We have literally managed to bumble 3 close games in  the dying  this year. Richmond round 1, running into goals and missing, bumbling at the death in round 11 against Essendon, then on top of bad kicking, McInnes idiotic fk up with half a minute to go, punching wgen he  should've mark, then wiping out Simmo to allow for the winner to be kicked. Could've got  McInnes and stung him up.

Even a draw would've shored up 9th spot but no, some idiot  had to fk up again.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Poll added: Marc Murphy should not be captain
i want to know why Murphy is playing is he has a bad knee, which will get a clean up at season's end, that has allowed him to train only once a week since the start of the season. Didn't know that until today.

If he's not fit, don't play him!!!
