I think that assessment is a bit over the top, it reads like a need for grievance counselling.
SPS has plenty of upside, but he needs to be used the right way. Not sure BB or the MC did him any favours, I've faith in Teague getting the most out of the playing group as it was a feature of his coaching last time he was here.
I'v mentioned before, our midfield looks horribly slow, but the problem is our engine room is too slow overall, on average we are below par in terms of leg speed. This means the opposition can block our run and spread with just a couple of decent chasers to peg guys like sMurph or Fisher.
It also means the opposition can put a quick negating spud like Jed Anderson or Jasper Pittard on Cripps, because they aren't needed to chase anyone on the outside. Cripps can't get away form them because he is not fast, and because he rarely hurts them physically they can play small on him, even when he does hurt them it's by accident.
Add one or two with leg speed to the rotation, instead of overloading the midfield with slows like Cripps, Setterfield, Ed, Kennedy, Walsh as an all in, and you find they all get more time and space!
Keogh....I've posted it before and didn't want to torture the readers again.....but if you look at the 2014 Draft, that was the killer! An absolute disaster....blokes from that draft would now be in their prime years but not one of them is left at the club.
Hughes or Rogers Either way they were both useless As I pointed out in the other forum the lack of improvement in our future midfield is a concern And yes SOS had to get rid of many at the end of 2015 But why replace spuds with spuds? We were panced in between the arks yet again. They had Sidebottom and Treloar both out
Elliott Daicos Phillips Noble Quaynor Crisp and Maynard like Noble are essentially defenders but provided plenty of drive around the middle Ed Curnow gets a pass Setterfield got the ball but his impact is minor It’s called depth in the middle We don’t have it The question is how long do you wait before guys turn the corner?
Cornes is a flog but it's a pretty valid point. Go back as far as the draft of 2015 through to 2018 (LY too early to call yet)....and in those 4 years, who has really come on?
2015
Weitering - been a gun this year. McKay - frustrates us with glimpses in patches but is also injured a lot. Curno - ditto Cunningham - ditto Silvagni J - been a surprise packet for mine for such a late pick.
2016
SPS- again, glimpses in patches but hasn't come on. Fisher - been good and looks like he can make it. Macreadie - barely played with injuries and form. Polson - been enough said already. Williamson - finally getting some return this year. Kerr - gone.
2017
Dow - enough said. O'Brien - not sure he'll make it either. TDK - after a couple of injury plagued seasons he's looking like a great pick up and a long term future for sure. Schumacher - gone Garlett - gone
2018
Walsh - gun Stocker - who knows? O'Dwyer - speculative pick unlikely to survive the cut. Silvagni B - same as O'Dwyer?
So for 4 years worth of draft picks and plenty of really high ones, the only successes to date look to be Weitering, Curnow (?), Fisher, Williamson (maybe), Walsh, TDK....McKay into his 5th year and needs to get better pretty quickly....
You can add getting McGovern for Shane Mc Adam and 2 picks in the 20s there was also some future late picks swapped Setterfield for ultimately a pick in the low 20s and Nathan Kreuger My other beef with SOS was recruiting so many crap players from other AFL clubs to prop up the list when he and his crew should have look more closely at the VFL SANFL WAFL NEFL For late bloomers Only Lang remains although I don’t rank Plowman Kennedy isn’t a mid he is a forward
I think that the root cause is our abysmal recruiting over an extended period which has left us bereft of good quality senior players in the 25 to 30 age group. The problem is that it can't be fixed in one, two or three years, it's a long process to build a list virtually from scratch.
This is it in a nutshell except I SOS ain’t the answer either
Jake got SOS to the club Their mates The club once again doesn’t do a thorough enough job In the first place Pickett he will come on doesn’t get enough of it efforts are often As weak as piss March bank can’t kick Kennedy too slow crap kick He brought I think 9 blokes from GWS Our list is still clogged with below average players If you can’t run and can’t kick your a liability in AFL
I do believe Bolton needs an experienced offsider to help him
It’s very disappointing Injuries have played a part but I believe it’s a simple case That many of our players are simply not good enough Kudos to Weiters did ok Cripps as usual gave his all Graham ok Murphy lots of it but as usual plenty of cheapies
To sack the coach would be a step backwards Look at his support staff Get an experienced tactician
Do everything to get a good head of recruiting SOS ain’t the answer
The Northern Blues isnt working and Luke Webster to me has little idea how to develop them into a team....our two best players are a small unit in Sam Cattapan who will probably never get to play AFL footy and it was the same last season with Lambert and Marcon. Cameron Wood is the other but he is purely backup and appears destined to just make up the numbers.....there seems little future in even having him on the list and we probably should have got the next Sam Jacobs from the SANFL/WAFL....
We need a standalone to to develop our players and we need a coach who is better than Webster...he has done nothing with this team and developed no one...
Judd brought more than just his own ability. It has been mentioned the Juddite nature of the entire side, and it was public knowledge that our boys were unproffessional thanks the influences around them.
I would be willing to bet, that the majority of the group started lifting their game month by month since Judd arrived where before that, there was little improvement to be had in the group.
No amount of Dangerfields, Kennedy's or anything would have fixed that, as Nick Stevens ruled the roost, with Fevola just behind him. They were the picture of everything that was culturally wrong about our football team, and the culture that Judd will have helped instill in our playing group will be one that lasts long after he is finished playing footy.
We dont know how much of this would have changed without him at the club, nor whether or not we would have been able to hang onto the blokes that have renewed their contracts since he arrived.
Disagree if the culture of the place was better then there is no need to have the best player coming to the club to fix the problem.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but, in my opinion, anyone who thinks the Judd deal wasn't good for Carlton has rocks in their head. The benefits of having the ultimate professional footballer at our club will continue long after he retires.
As for winning a flag, Malthouse was employed to do just that so, if we don't win one this season, it will be 2015.
Yes, we may be missing a KPP or two on last season's form but, if the stars align, we could have several in form KPPs vying for a spot in the 22.
As others have pointed out, the Swans weren't even contenders in 2005.
Would you say the same thing if we had Dangerfield, Scott Thompson and Josh Kennedy all now at their peak or a great player in potentially his last season and Armfield. I know what I would choose. It comes down to your recruiters having more hits than misses. These deals are a thing of the past.
