AFLW 2024 Rd 1: Carlton vs Hawthorn

Our first AFLW game against Hawthorn is this Sunday at 13:05 at Frankston.
Why Frankston? Good question, and I don't have a good answer. Not a great place to play when it is windy.
Lulu Beaty is named for her debut. The rest of the team is, as yet, uncertain, as in Schödinger's Cat. No doubt it will drop into its Eigen State in the next few days. :)

This week's line-up:

B:  [13] Lulu Beatty  [21] Harriet Cordner
HB:  [36] Ciara Fitzgerald  [9] Kerryn Peterson  [27] Gen Lawson-Tavan
C:  [17] Dayna Finn  [18] Madeleine Guerin  [3] Darcy Vescio
HF:  [23] Lila Keck  [22] Mia Austin  [49] Madeline Hendrie
F:  [16] Breann Moody  [4] Keeley Skepper
R:  [12] Jessica Good  [10] Mimi Hill  [5] Abbie McKay
Int:  [25] Keeley Sherar  [2] Jessica Dal Pos  [20] Lily Goss  [11] Yasmin Duursma  [8] Celine Moody  [1] Amelia Velardo  [6] Gab Pound  [14] Marianna Anthony

Not sure how the girls will go, but the side looks stronger than last year.
Our defence I'm not sure about. The only real height is Cordner. Good to see Kerryn Peterson out there: she didn't play much last season.
Good to see Maddy Guerin back. Hopefully she can find the form she had before her last injury. Her kicking was longer than most of her teammates.

For what it is worth, Hawthorn are expected to be big improvers this year. Hope we tear them a new one.

I think talent wise we are weaker this year compared to last. We lost quite a few players to other clubs.

Our 'big recruits' in Duursma and Moody are both on an extended bench. Pound and Sherar are also on the bench who would be top 10 picked usually. Few other girls on there would seem stiff to miss out too.

Peterson was trying to get out of defence last year, but mass exodus of tall talent there means she's shuttled back there. How well that backline works is the key to our year.

Our mids are more than capable.

Our forwards are a bit of a mixed back, but good enough to get the job done.
Hopefully Bree Moody can successfully balance kicking goals at FF and dominating the ruck.

Vescio moving out of the forwardline is supposed to be a permanent move.....but we've heard that once before, so we'll see how that goes.

Ultimately, we seem to be playing as a team, even our talent doesn't quite stack up compared to others.

I predict we'll finish outside the 8, but shouldn't be bottom 4, unless injuries hit.

But the womens game is so hard to predict with such short seasons and uneven fixturing.

Terribly windy condition down at Frankston for this game.

Hawks picked a side to play in these conditions, smaller, runners.
We picked a tall marking side, with the wind not helping us at all.

First time we've ever played against the Hawks....and first time at this ground i believe and it shows.

A few things to like, but overall i think its going to be a long year for the girls.

Still too fumbly.
Until we can give the ball to teamates in more space it’ll continue.
Let’s go BIG !

Hawthorn were too good. They looked a pretty good team. I thought we were better than last season in the way we played and looked a little stronger over the ball. Hopefully we can improve as the season progresses.

Exactly what I saw too, NB. They fumble like they're just not confident. Then the handballing into trouble, too short, safe, thinking too much... not enough instinctual giving off, trusting yourself.

However, the attitude and want was good. And willingness to pressure was also pleasing.

When the Dawks went forward, they looked dangerous. Plus the Dawks were strong at pushing forward, regardless of the method and were better on the grass.

Considering we kicked the first 2 gls before the Dawks turned up, it was pretty disappointing after the half way mark of the first qtr.
Only our ruthless best, from Board to bootstudders will get us no. 17

HAWTHORN    2.1    5.4    6.7   9.12 (66)
CARLTON        2.2    2.2    3.3   4.4 (28)

Not a lot to be happy about. 32 possessions to Abbie McKay is one of them.
