The Sports Desk / The Ashes - Second Test @ Lords
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jul/15/england-unchanged-team-second-test

Quote
England have stuck with a winning squad for the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

Alastair Cook's team hung on for a famous 14-run win in a titanic first Test at Trent Bridge and the selectors this morning confirmed the same 13 to pick from when the second starts on Thursday.

Cook and his coach Andy Flower will then have tougher decisions to make about whether to again give Steven Finn the nod as their third seamer ahead of either Tim Bresnan or Graham Onions.

A Cook (Essex, capt), J Anderson (Lancashire), J Bairstow (Yorkshire), I Bell (Warwickshire), T Bresnan (Yorkshire), S Broad (Nottinghamshire), S Finn (Middlesex), G (Durham), K Pietersen (Surrey), M Prior (Sussex), J Root (Yorkshire), G Swann, (Nottinghamshire), J Trott (Warwickshire).

I hope they keep Finn in the starting 11 because he bowls juicy pies that all of our batsmen bite into with ease.

As for the Aussie team, Cowan has to be dropped surely, getting out to that part-timer Joe Root was unforgiveable. I still think we need another bowling option because Watson is not a wicket-taker, he's just a stop-gap measure whilst the front-liners catch their breath.

Can we further strengthen the batting at all ??

Robert Heatley Stand / Reshape & Remodel Watson = The Spine Is Stronger Overall
Everyone was in raptures last night about Henderson going into attack and dominating. It gave the team someone to kick to in confidence because they new that he would make the lead, fight for the ball or take a strong mark. He was ably assisted by Rowe who whilst not being in the same league as Henderson, did play the CHF position better than anyone we've seen for some time.

In defence we had Jamison, who admittedly made some shocking errors, but he is a proven key position defender. He was ably assisted by MATHEW WATSON, that's right, the lad we took with our first pick in the 2010 National Draft at #18. He's a big kid too, 195cm & 100kg if you don't mind !!

I am one of many who is of the opinion that Watson won't make it and for a variety of reasons. He is quite slow, is not particularly strong overhead but his kicking is enough to bring back the old 'woof' cry (he is a left-footer like Christou too).

The thing is, if he was to really improve his game and warrant regular selection, it really straightens up our spine immeasurably. Now I'm not going to suggest that he should be gifted games between now & the end of the season to give him more confidence or the like, but what I do think may be a better option is for the people at our club to work on his fitness, body shape & overall agility. Whether we have the people at the club capable of doing this is actually a completely seperate & lengthy discussion on its own.

To me, Watson always looks like a young kid with a lot of 'puppy fat' on him, his body shape is not ideal for our game either. If you look at Karmicheal Hunt from the Suns, they have worked with him to reshape & remodel his body away from the typical NRL shaped player to one that works well in the AFL. Watson may benefit from the same sort of treatment !!

It would be a great waste (to me anyway) if we were to flick Watson before we put some intensive work into him to find out if he is the answer to our problems. I'm not saying that it is a 100% guaranteed winner idea, just a preference to give the guy one belting pre-season fitness campaign specifically designed to change him around.

If it doesn't work, then we could do what we wanted with him in the knowledge that we gave it our best shot.

Jamison
Watson
Judd
Henderson
Boyd

It's a spine that might test a few opposition teams.

Blah-Blah Bar / The Things You See At The Footy (The Freak File)
Saw some great sites at the Swans V Giants game today, certainly adds to the spectacle :

When I asked this guy where he got his suit made, he assured me it wasn't "off the rack".

This guy was a complete cack, he lent over the balcony when he saw the Swans guy in his suit and said "you are a joke, why would you ever dress up like that, time to take a good look at yourself", they both pissed themselves laughing.

I was wondering where Phyllis Diller was these days ?? Get onto the clodhoppers she wear as shoes.

Anyone got anything else to add to "The Freak File" ??

After sleeping on it, I'm still pleased we got a win over the Saints given they have beaten us 14 out of the past 16 times. Let's be honest though, we beat a crap team who we should beat as they are below us on the ladder.

What is really important though is that win last night does not excuse the team for last week's lame effort and no-one here should be forgetting it either.

Can someone point out how Watson being hit on the pad is given out & Bell being hit on the pad is given not out ??

Without the intervention of a computer prediction from Hawkeye, they are identical !!

Doing it easy at the moment, we just need to keep building inning's and partnerships all along the way and we're home !! :-D

If these two can put on another 27, we will be at 111 (nelson) and 200 off the win. Even if the Poms get a breakthrough by then, still 9 wickets in hand with Clarke, Cowan & Haddin owing us 30-40 each due to their failures in the first dig.

All we have to do is keep Swann out as he is the real danger on this pitch, at present, he's frustrated as all buggery at present and lets out a big "oooohhh" or "aaaaaahhh" every ball.

0-76 and looking good, keep batting like Bell & Broad did yesterday, play the percentages.

Agree with Brother Elwood about McInness, he has quietly found his way back in the team and at 191cmhe does look after that third-marking tall.

Still not back to his full fitness or playing capacity after being out for so long but he is an integral part of our defensive unit.

since when have you been so positive?

I've got a new therapist who has really turned me a round.   :P

Geeze, Watson moved like an Iceberg. Surely gone either this year or next.
Was so happy to see two key forwards in Hendo and Rowe dominating our forward line again. Its been a while.
Jamo started the year off so well. Don't know what's happened. He's lucky Reiwoldt didn't bring his kicking boots.
Yazz has all the talent in the world, but is so very lazy. No wonder he drives Mick mad!
McInnes is goingto be a little ripper!
Kreuzer needs to grow a pair! Plays too nice, and really should be better then he is right now.
We didn't miss Robbo. Don't see why he should come back into the side to be honest.
Garlett was the invisible man again.
We still turn the ball over too often
Armfield is another guy who is badly out of form
Judd still plays like he's the Captain. Lifted when we needed him the most.
Heard that Sticks came out in the pre match and defended our list. Seriously, is he for real ? Confirms what a lot of us are thinking about him and his board! The Tiprat is a total c*nt! Cant believe the big deal they were making about him being booed. Hello BT and Darc, we ve been booing him for 10 bloody years!!!

Watson has some great disposal skills (how about the torp ??) but you are right about his pace, he doesn't read it well enough to cut corners & gets himself out of position too often, sad really, but he will not be around for the long-term.

Yarran & his laziness .... !! Its the thing that irks the bejesus out of me, if he applied himself like Dangerfield does, he'd win a Brownlow but I have serious doubts whether he will ever get out of this second gear he just idles around the ground in, he too won't be in for the long haul.

As for Sticks ................ no seriously, did he really ?? Major face-palm & total embarrassment if that is the case.
