Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2023: A review
Apart from the obvious on-field performance improvement, I think the desire of Cook et al to make CFC a 'good club' is well on the way.  It's one thing to get your act together on the field, but it has been said many times that success is born out of a stable, supportive and forward-thinking administration (which we haven't had for 25+ years).

'Stronger Together' is the best way to sum that all up.  Kudos to those who are working to make this happen.

I questioned Marchbank over Kemp v Lions. Marchbank fumbled early on but improved across the 3 finals. Kemp held his own extremely well given the number of games he's played.

The real surprise for me was Boyd. He has improved as he's got more games, which is terrific. What I didn't expect was an almost faultless performance in a preliminary final. Given he's only played how many games for us?

Boyd could turn into a Sinclair/Coleman/Daniel type, and that is a clear missing piece to our defensive run.  Throw in Williams as well and the run out of our backline will certainly improve.

That's the key to unlocking the Charlie and Harry double-headed mosnter - get the ball in deep and fast for lots on one-on-ones.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL 2023 Preliminary Final Carlton vs Brisbane Post Game Prognostications
Through the lens of a side that was 4-1-8 not that long ago, we have gotten far more out of this season that anyone could ever have imagined.   Sets up a fantastic pillar for 2024 and beyond.

The learning we have to absorb is the difference when we take the game on.    First 20 minutes and most of the last quarter, we ran hard together, and dared to win.  In the middle bit, we were stodgy and reactionary, and totally got our comeuppance.   And any time we come up against sides with fast-running half-backs who set up play, we are in trouble (Coleman and McKenna completely owned us tonight), we need some harder working half-forwards who do not let this happen.

But we have certainly proved we are there or thereabouts, and I can't help thinking that if that game is at the MCG, we turn the tables.

Disappointed, but wrapped that we are relevant once again.......

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Sam Newman at it again!
Sam Newman is nothing but a grumpy old man who is still looking for headlines.

He made a living on the Footy Show by going out on the street and making fools of unfortunates who didn't know any better, and he is still poking a stick at those he feels are beneath him.

I know it is said he is a top bloke, but his public persona is one of an irrelevant flog who doesn't deserve the oxygen that he keeps getting from his old mates in the media.  He should look up the word respect and see if he can find a scintilla of it in his rantings.

What also comes with freedom of speech is the responsibility of free speech.  You can't have one without the other.

Thre great thing is, I don't think we can say that any of the 22 didn't have a dip when their time came.  Some have had more moments than others, but what keeps it all together is the preparedness for each and every player to do their bit.

If we accept that this has come from the Voss philosophy, it bodes well not just for the next week or two, but several more seasons.

I'm not really a fan of this "free hit" mentality that seems to be going around. Whilst I understand the psychological and motivational trickery behind the idea, I think it's false. I think if the players adopt that mentality, they have already convinced themselves that a loss is okay, they have already talked themselves into approaching the game with a less competitive mindset. As we know from our recent history, these opportunities are rare, and there is absolutely no guarantee that the boys will get another one.

I know Brisbane are clear and obvious favourites, but I think both teams are under equal pressure to win, and any loss should be equally felt by both. The boys must forego this "free hit" mentality and must go in believing that a loss will be devastating.
Reckon Brisbane has far more pressure on them than we do - they are expected to win and have supposedly been building towards this for three years.

Never underestimate the weight of expectation, and they have certainly have had their 'deer in the headlights' moments this year.  Seen it so many times - I call it expectation paralysis.

Not to mention they will have only played one game of footy in a month (and even that was a walk in the park).  Based on similar situations (Syd v Gee 2016 PF, Coll v Rich 2018 PF, WB vs PA 2021 PF), the secret will be to go super-hard at the start while they are still warming up, and build a half-decent lead - then, the combination of trailing and weight of expectation becomes too big to cope with.

I don't think for one minute this group will settle for an honourable loss.  They are 240 minutes of strong football away from what would probably be this club's greatest ever premiership, if not the greatest ever in the history of the AFL/VFL.

Love the optimism, Laj, but the bow is pretty long...!

Given what happened in the 1945 Grand Final, does that mean we have to flatten half of the opposition on the day?

Really hope we take the game on this week - we got stage-fright last week and it almost cost us.

The way I see it, this week is a bit of a free hit - Melbourne has a lot more to lose than us, their list is headed south rather than north, and if they get knocked out in straight sets for a second year, the party may be over for a while.  We should go out and have a real crack without the fear of what happens next.

We have to get the ball in extra fast this week to overcome the May-Lever stonewall and create some ground-level chaos.

Out : McKay, Martin
In : Motlop, Silvagni (Kennedy as a swing if JSOS is not right), Fisher Sub.
