Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2024 Brownlow Medal Thread
Lets not let facts get in the way of good stories by the naysayers.
Oh my god, the negativity. Most of us saw with our own eyes that he almost ALWAYS single-handedly influenced games that were in the balance (and dominated games that were not).
Having watched footy for 50+ years I’ve never been more certain of a Brownlow winner. He deserved every vote and he deserved to win by the length of the straight.
Why does the QB at the Super Bowl inevitably win the MVP? Because they have/had the biggest influence. Anyone whingeing about this has no feel for the game or is a Collingwood supporter.
His best quarters are invariably his 3rd and 4th so his efforts would be fresh in the umps minds when they cast votes (sans stats as others have pointed out) after the siren.
Whenever he’s pinged with a free against he just gives the umps that cheeky “you got me” look, gives the ball straight back and gets on with it. That counts for a lot. He is inscrutably fair and I agree with Gerard Whately - it’s a unique quirk that you have to be the “fairest” in this award and it would be a shame to lose that history.
EDIT: I just heard Whateley has been one of those denigrating Crippa’s incredible achievement. I take back what I said. screw him.

Crippa gets tagged more than any other player but still makes the ball his sole focus.
He [almost] never remonstrates or complains when the umps ping him for incorrect disposal or htb (umps would LOVE this).
He almost always finishes games strongly which means he would be fresh in their minds when they cast the votes afterwards.
There’s not a dirty bone in his body (I see there’s some idiots still going on about Ah Chee getting in his way).
He actually smiles on the field like he enjoys being out there. Just a likeable guy.

I'd like to get some angry pills into some of our boys. They seem to play without them and I think we could use some.
Did you see when Newman handed the ball back to Rayner after the ump paid a mark, Rayner immediately forearmed him in the chest as a nice “thank you”.

Maybe our mistake wasn't so much not playing some of these youngsters last night....but not giving them more game time through the year.
…
The kids settled OK in the final couple of H&A games but finals are different.
We'll never know how they would have gone now, but it was probably as big a risk as playing underdone players...and the result may not have been much different.
YES! Absolutely this. More game time during the year - the few games they played showed they were eager and hungry. Exactly the qualities that were missing last night.
Can’t imagine the result would have been any worse but how valuable would such experience be going forward?
Completely disillusioned with the MC’s lack of imagination.

The worst team we have put on the park for a couple of years and we lost with nearly last the last kick of the day.
Everyone tells me how great Russell was with Curnow’s knees. Great job there but an absolute bloodbath everybody else.
My recollection is that we were all frustrated with the slowness of Curnow’s recovery.
His return was always “a few weeks away”.
Then I heard that the fitness staff were trying experimental rehab techniques and it was only when they reverted to the tried and tested approach that he came good.
Anyway, hopefully the club chooses wisely going forward and we don’t have that excuse next season.

[3] Kicking into the forward line: I could wax lyrical about this one, but the forwards didn't help. They were so static! Haven't they heard of leading? Or opening leading lanes?
To me it’s a stark difference no matter who we play but it’s not the kicking skills, it’s the football nouse from the forwards to be able to create and have the awareness of space - and then, equally as important, for the kickers to quickly calculate where the delivery of the ball will be to their advantage.
How many times did we see the St Kilda forwards run onto the ball that was kicked to where they weren’t … until they were?
Our delivery has never been like this. We rely on Curnow and McKay to win the physical one on one contest. Maybe that’s why Walsh and Kennedy who get the ball A LOT have such poor disposal efficiency ratings?
Frustrates me that this part of our game plan is so poorly developed when one would think it’s an easy skill or system to practice.

Something crook in tootgarook.
You mean like the whole team getting around McGovern after he missed a gettable shot to win the game last week. Closed ranks. Win together, fail together. Etc.
So what does he do to repay the team? Gives a gobfull to a teammate who was apparently to blame for his own inability to spoil his opponent.
Disgraceful.

I'm not exactly sure where the issues lie. I'm not sure if it's the undeniable reality that all teams have up and down periods, injuries, fatigue, selection etc. I don't think it's about this or that position. It's not IMO about small forwards, or rucks, or key defenders. Too many of our players just seem in poor form.
Yeah, we can speculate all we like but none of us ‘outsiders’ can possibly know where the issue lies or even if there is an issue (other than not good enough).
It’s perplexing as hell though. We were/are so close.
I’m wondering if Voss falls into that category of being such a champion player that he just expects others to execute perfectly every time, rather than getting them to focus on one specific task or skill set which benefits the team while sacrificing their personal gain.
McCrae wasn’t exactly a superstar but his players lock into a system and ‘connected’ more seamlessly than we did for most of the night.
For instance, why didn’t anyone stick like glue to Bobby Hill all night? The guy won a premiership off his own bat last year yet was paid little respect for most of the game.
Bringing Cox in was a no brainer given the absence of TDK. Cameron took 6 marks and Pittonet zero. Although, to be fair, I thought Pittonet’s last quarter was enormous and was instrumental in our comeback.
Another positive was Crippa probably picked up votes again.

We're a nice team, unfortunately nice teams don't win many premierships.
Can’t believe how we put up with McCreery bullying us.
And that free to Cox and the beautiful rugby throw through for a rushed behind. Ugh.

Pies do the basics right. We don’t. Dunno how many times we didn’t have basic front and centres.
Basically this. Two pieces of play stood out for me. In the 3rd q after 2 consecutive goals , Walshy streaming forward out of the centre again, kicks the ball to the WRONG (boundary) side of can’t-remember-who. C’wood player marks and the momentum was lost. I think they got a goal from the rebound. Ball needed to be a couple of metres to the right.
Much has been said about his disposal into the F50 so I guess this was another stat in that dept.
Second example - same quarter, after struggling to clear out of the backline, pass is to Cincotta who elects to go for the chest mark rather than extend the arms. Ball is spoiled and, again, they get a goal from the turnover.
Seemingly minor incidents in isolation but, as Tex said, in such close games, it’s often the basics.

c) injuries
d) scheduling
e) venue
f) umpires
g) coach
h) crapeness
In other news - is Walshy the most “caught” player in the league?

FFS, please rest TDK now. Should've been rested 2 weeks ago.
ummm, he was. Against Richmond in R16.
But yes, looks banged up.

Also, when the siren went: “We’ve been hearing all week that the key message from Beveridge has been “desperation””.
And there you have it my friends.
Out coached.
Out evened-ed.
Out desperated.

Plus, he’s at his best when he ‘halves’ or negates the hit outs and then pounces on the ball at his feet. Not so good against stronger rucks who hold him out then thump the ball metres out of range where even he (TDK) can’t follow up.
