Title: Rd 22: Post Game quiet and frustrated discussion: Carlton vs Melbourne
Post by: crashlander on August 20, 2016, 08:25:21 pm
Another game I won't see this year. I cannot remember missing so many games in a season since 1971.
Hope the result is what we want, but at this point it is almost an advantage to lose: better draft picks. I thought we had past that stage, but I guess our list still needs a few more years work.

If we win next week we end up with 8 wins. Interesting, 0-4, 6-1, 0-9 then finish 2-0 (?). Interesting way to get 8 (?) wins. Should've won 9.

A very good win on the back of a much improved team effort, I would have taken the $3.75 but I thought we were a $5+ chance.
Melbourne had plenty of chances to make it close but couldn't buy a goal in the second half, those are the breaks and we'll take it.
Beat the junkies next week and it's 8 wins, probably better than any of us thought in March.

Good win set up early. Difficult conditions but the defence held its shape well led by the evergreen Simpson and Doc. The mids also did their job with Gibbs and Cripps having great games. The two rucks worked over Gawn and did some ok stuff around the ground. Buckley's 3 goals were telling. A win next week would be nice.

The story of my life on the punt Laj although I backed the cup winner at 100 to 1.
I thought Cunningham showed a bit, some very nice skills here and there which were very pleasing to see.
If he comes up we'll have jagged four good youngsters in one season in him, Weitering, Silvagni and Curnow, if McKay makes it it would be 5.
Geelong did it in one year and it ended with three flags, do we dare to dream?

100/1, nice work. Mine's still running.

Yes, I agree with all of that. Another decent trade/draft, eventually superseding some of our current players

Phillips and Plowman for Geelong's first pick looks like a good deal as well, probably pick 16 or so.
Sumner is a bonus.

Of course you don't hang your hat on SC scores - but Liam Jones scored 102 points, didn't have a massive disposal count, but that score shows all the small things he did......he was enormous today. Well done & should've been running around at senior level a lot sooner than this.

All the usual suspects played out of their skins today (i.e. Simmo, Doc, Gibbs, Cripps), but this time they dragged a few along with them......Plowman (who had been poor for a few weeks), Buckley, Armfield, Sumner, Kreuzer, White, Graham (to name a few). Everyone to a man cracked-in from the get-go against team who get ahead of themselves moreso than other team in the AFL. Can't remember seeing Carlton supporters so outnumbered by Melbourne supporters (the MCC was extremely busy).....all of them expecting this to be the beginning of their charge into the finals.....this is reality check # 3 or 4 for them this year, will they ever learn!?

Jesse Hogan should do the honourable thing and give his Rising Star award to the much more deserved Patrick Cripps......when you look at what each of them have them have done this year, Cripps is on a different planet to Hogan - who is a lazy footballer, who's only interested when the ball is coming at him lace-out.

Loved how Gawn kicked the first goal of the last & they were all "Come on!!!" (apparently 2 hands in the back is okay), then within 5 mins his direct opponent took a ripping grab & sealed the win......nicely done Andrew Phillips.

A nice win Blues.....one I certainly didn't see coming.

A very enjoyable afternoon with the boys sticking to tbeir tasks and producing a solid team effort. Our defence is coming along nicely and today we set up well and moved the ball forward from defence very well IMO. The midfield also did OK but is still a  WIP, Gibbs and Cripps very good. Jones was pretty good today also and did a lot of work in keeping pressure on the Dees defence. A win is always nice!

We did a lot better than I expected and our winning margin was twice what I thought :)

The effort that was missing against St Kilda and in the first half last week was certainly there from the first bounce.  It just shows what we're capable of when we're switched on.

I like what I saw from Cuningham today.  He didn't get a lot of the ball but he knows where it is, made good position and good decisions and affected the outcome of contests.  I reckon he'll be a regular next season. As B4L suggested, we'll have 5 for 5 if McKay lives up to expectations.

Anyway, it was a good day at the footy, even if there were lots of Melbourne supporters in what is usually a Carlton members' area.  They were a fairly inoffensive lot and one old bloke spent half the game twisted in his seat and trying to make conversation with the Blues supporters in my row.

Great win. The pressure was all on the Dees as they had to win and win well. Our attack on the ball and extra pressure from our forwards caused them to make some big errors early. Fantastic midfield clearance rate from Cripps and Gibbs. We just have to develop some midfield support around these guys.

Agreed - Liam has been a contributor in several of our wins this year and not just with goals or disposals. Wright and Buckley also made significant contributions without lots of possessions.

Kudos to whichever of the coaches set the plan for countering Gawn by having two players apposed to him in the ruck at every opportunity. One of Kreuzer's better games for the year - especially as an extra midfielder.

Cunningham showed enough to demonstrate why we drafted him.

If Gibbs were to consistently show the level of intensity that he brought in the first half today he would justify his draft position.

Plenty of accolades for loads of our blokes today and deservedly so, especially Cripps, Gibbs, Simpson, Kruz, Curnow etc.

But although he didn't get many possessions I was cautiously pleased with what I saw from Cuningham. His defensive game was first rate. Pretty sure N. Jones checked his shorts from time to time as it must have felt like Cuningham was in them with him. Then later in the game the kid got a bit of confidence and showed us some of his quick thinking and other skills. Early days, but there was a, dare I say it... definite green sprout!

Won it in the midfield, the tag teaming of Kruezer and Philips on Gawn worked very well and Cripps/Gibbs totally eclipsed Viney, Jones, Petracca and crew....
As others have suggested Liam Jones played his role and you cant knock his work rate, we look more likely to score when Jones provides a contest and we cant go back to the Casboult only forward line setup...

Jesse Hogan looks like he sooks up when things dont run his way and he doesnt look interested, like he is just waiting for his contract to expire and head back West.
Dylan Buckley has probably shored up an extension to his contract and I prefer Sumner back in the team to Boekhorst....

Cunningham showed some poise at times and looks a promising player, kudos to Plowman who isnt showy but very honest and has taken the role of the retired Jamison..

The kid Hunt from Melbourne did impress me with his attack on the footy and leg speed....they may have found a player, looked a bit like a underdeveloped Nat Fyfe running from half back..

Great win Blues ;D ;D

I did not see this win coming, but started to dream half way into the first.
On the back of a very smart Gawn-less plan, the Blues meant business from the first bounce. We've done that a bit this year where you can almost predict the result based on early performance.

Our rucks were great against the great... Our mids led by Crippa and Gibbswere well supported by Ed and the likes of Graham, Buckley, Wright, MK etc.made it almost impossible for the Dees at stoppages.

Goals from the guys that have been in 2's lately really gave us the reward on the board.

The defence was, as it has been most of the year were cohesive. Weiters certainly did his NRS nomination no harm today. Kudos to Simmo, Doc, Plowman, Rowe n co.

A game that was a pleasure to watch from go to woa. Unlike last week, I didn't find my heart racing over a tonne once ^-^.
In the spirit of farewelling our greats, the boys played with the heart and endeavour that is deserved (much like Juddy's this time last year).

Enjoy your celebrations Bluebaggers.

It says a bit when Gibbs and Cripps (with support from a 2011 rookie draftee and a second gamer) were able to take apart 'the up and coming midfield superstars with at least 7 able to rotate through). Say a bit about Melbourne but also says a lot more about the qualities of Gibbs and Cripps.

I thought Gibbs set up the game for us, Cripps was great in the second half and Simpson defended superbly as always, but it was Gibbs for me today. Kreuzer and Phillips gave Gawn a bath, Buckley and Graham had a major impact and if Graham could be a bit more assured in his delivery than he could be a Mitchell type player for us. Our disposal by foot and hand continues to let us down but when we attack the ball and the man with ferocity like today, we can be as good as anyone. We need another quality midfielder, another key defender, a key forward, a hungry half forward and some pace across the ground. It is time to start getting a bit excited about 2017.

Probably plays better as the CHF rather than being stuck in the goalsquare. His last two weeks have shown the key forwards can contribute alot without necessarily hitting the scoreboard. Opens it up for others.

Just saw Q2 highlights. Docherty layed 2 of the best tackles deep in defense. First on the giant Gawn, then runs down and buries hardnut Jones.
Sensational, just sensational. Our future looks bright with the likes of this young man leading.

Loved Crippa's tackle on Gawn too. We ended up with more than 80 tackles, and by Scott, some of them were bone crunchers. Last year I was dreaming for this sort of effort and intensity. Well done Blues.

Agree with others Liam Jones played his role well today. His effort is unquestionable, as is his ability to dust off after being defeated and face up again (unlike sooky Hogan - he needs an attitude adjustment big time). From what I saw on TV, he looks to have read the play much better than earlier in the year.

Doc should be AA, Simmo would be bloody close. Weiters should win the Rising Star award but probably wont because he plays for Carlton. Either Parish (the feel sorry factor) or Caleb Daniel (everyone loves the Doggies factor) will win it.

Great win today, with a strong team performance led from the midfield. Liked that we controlled the game for the most part, with a fine defensive effort and some good tactics at stoppages that nulified the melbourne ruck, and put great pressure on their midfilders.

Well done blues.

Two rushed behinds each.  Melbourne missed some easy shots but others were under pressure.  Hogan kicked 1 goal 3 and Petracca kicked 2 behinds, all of which were gettable.

Dylan Buckley's thumping goal from about 60 out features in the round 22 Top 10 - afl.com

Great performance today young fella.

Am I dreaming, one should someone slap me to wake me up ? We won a game of footy ? Do we run the risk of climbing above Ninthmond on the ladder ? WTF happened ? I have been busy for the last few weeks. Catching nothing but end results and watching little to no football.

Such a tragedy for SOS, Nthmond play the Swans who are desperate to secure top spot, we play CheatsFC in a nothing game!

But one thing we can hope for next weekend, the Colliwobbles have a chance to put an end to the Dawks dynasty! Hawthorn cannot win from 5th!

The times I noticed Daisy mainly was him missing tackles or not doing anything great at all and I did think 'retire' a few times!

Go Liam Jones!

Gee, we look better with him in the forward in.

He hots contests hard both in the air and on the ground and is a vastly different tall/key forward to that of Casboult, Everitt and Jaksch.

He has a contract for next year and to tell you the truth he may be worth keeping.

Not sure 100% though as I was very disappointed with Casboult again.

Casboult by himself, or Jones by himself won't work so we need a multi-pronged setup for sure.

If nothing else, Jones provides a regular contest and target to kick to. Plenty he still needs to do but he has no doubt improved, and quite a bit IMHO!

Will be interesting if we are going to be able to snare other talls such as GWS players Tomlinson, Marchbank and Stewart. Word we are keen on another of their rucks in Tom Downie.

Pick 4 has now just become pick 5.

I'm ok with that. Nothing like winning.

Hoping we belt the Bombers next week too and make it 8 wins for the year, which would be a massive win IMO!

BTW, Cuningham looks a player.

And, wouldn't mind seeing Harry McKay play this week. How to fit him in, not sure, especially if Jack Silvagni is right to come back in. He would come in for Everitt.

He seems all at sea ATM, running around in a "nothing" capacity. Strange really, the time is nigh me thinks.

Harry for Everitt a must.

At least you know with the former, he'll give 100% every minute of the match and chase hard. As for Andrejs, best not said....not really giving us much.

I don't think Casboult was poor yesterday, he just couldn't get his hands on the pill. He and Jones do both need to play but they also need to converge, not diverge!

Agreed, maybe CFC should offer him a coaching gig if he agrees to hang up the boots without a major payout?

He seems a well liked bloke and no dummy relative to 99% of AFL players.

Maybe, doesn't come across as one who wants to stay involved in footy at that level when he retires but you never know.

And on a lighter note, is it just my ears or does Bolts refer to Gibbs as Gibb in his presser ? Not once, but twice.

Harsh mina. Shane Watson is in his first year at the Club and just hasn't got the cattle at his disposal yet (whether theyhave been injured, not ready or not drafted yet). He is doing the best he can at trying to make a strawberry jam out of pig crap.

........Weiters should win the Rising Star award but probably wont because he plays for Carlton. Either Parish (the feel sorry factor) or Caleb Daniel (everyone loves the Doggies factor) will win it.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Weitering hasn't got a stone's throw in hell of winning the Rising Star.....not because he plays for Carlton, because of lack of sustained form. Started the season like a house on fire, but apart from maybe 2 performances I can think of, has been average at best the past 12 weeks. Mills, Daniel, Parish & Petracca have flown past him as if he were standing still.

Game high 9 intercepts on the weekend says otherwise Brettie.....he's probably right at the pointy end in this stat too, league wide, but its too hard to find any concrete info on it.

The poise of the kid is unparalled in his position for his age.

Weiterings 'average' is probably better than T-birds best.

The rising star award is useful for one thing... punting.

Apart from that it is meaningless. Lewis Taylor won it FFS.

And there's this lol. Think about it, last years first and second were on show on the same ground at the same time. One, second in the NRS, willed his side over the line (or was instrumental in the win at least) with brute strength and determination in the clinches. The other, the winner, was at his petulant best. Nuff said.

My thoughts too Kruddler - Weitering played very well on Sunday and has been very consistent over the season.  Hogan got the nod last season allegedly because it's harder to play as a key position player and the same consideration should have Weitering ahead.

However, I'm afraid that Bear is on the money too  ::)

The fact that it is voted for by "experts" at the end of the season, makes it meaningless.  It is like AA selection.  Just based on gut feeling, and not on any hard facts, or an analysis of game by game.  Easily influenced by who is talked up in the media....  I wouldnt be surprised if Nic Nat and Cyril get a few votes, just out of habit from the "experts"

As others have said - Daniel is a certainty - not only is he feel good factor (Doggies), but he will make a good story (little guy who was passed over!!)

Weiters should get a look in as he is a tall, who, while he may have fallen off a bit, is still a huge factor in holding together a pretty good back 6

BUT he wont

Interesting now that we have players now with real pace that can kick a long goal on the run with the like of Touhy, Buckley and Armfield to a lesser extent. Nothing more inspiring than seeing a speedster break the lines and kick a long goal from 50. Boekhorst had terrific pace too and looks like he'll be a decent player, just a bit up and down for now in regards to consistency. Reckon if we had got him at pick 40, instead of 19, then we would've said we had down well.
