Re: China Reply #108 – June 23, 2022, 07:10:27 pm This is a very good, recent appraisal of the military threat China poses to Australia:https://www.lowyinstitute.org/publications/australia-and-growing-reach-china-s-militaryAnother important factor is that, apart from oppressing its own citizens, China's military hasn't been involved in a shooting war since the middle of last century. Those latest tactics where they fired on Kyiv civilian targets was another war crime designed to attack the psyche of the Ukranian people, seeing children trapped screaming in rubble must be hard for Zelensky to watch knowing Nato and the West wont be bailing them out and I hear his fighting words that they will take the Dombas back but I fear its too late and thats Russian territory now for good.Putin is also providing his lacky boy mate the leader of Belarus with a missile system as well, defensive he calls it but it has nuclear capabilities and will be used to attack Ukraine from the Belarus border and probably attack NATO supplies from Poland once they cross the Ukraine border. Re: China Reply #118 – February 27, 2025, 09:55:58 am China continue to sign agreements withsmall Pacific nations and now have the Cook Islands on the payroll. New Zealand who have tried to play Switzerland in the Pacific now have Xi on their doorstep with China building infrastructure for Shipping and Transport for the Cook Islands which is shorthand for a place to park and refuel Chinese Naval vessels and conduct surveillance work.NZ need to figure out what side of the fence they want to jump on and be part of the AUKUS agreement or get used to Chinese Warships being part of the scenery in the Tasman. I doubt NZ can depend on Trump any more than Australia can, so they best be looking at local capabilities.AUKUS is fine, the capability the submarines bring to patrol and defend our massive border is significant, it should have happened decades ago!The biggest problem we have with China building infrastructure in the Sth Pacific is that it collects the one thing it can't reliably collect by remote surveillance, economic data. Get the accurate trade and economic data and it delivers levers to pull.FWIW, our Feds should never have allowed Dan to sign over the ports, the Feds should have funded a port upgrade way before any rail or road deals, but the NSW dominated parliament was asleep at the wheel much like when it allowed Chinese companies to build private big Jet capable airstrips in WA.
