Robert Heatley Stand / Re: You've been ROBBO'd
I have two words for you.............Darren Tarczon

Guy McKenna must have nightmares about Carlton  >:D

That game was a ripper as i think it was the same game Minton-Connell kicked the winner against WC and broker their 13 game streak in 1991.

I miss Princes Park

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Round 9: Carlton vs. Sydney Post Game Pain
Actually, especially during the Shane O'Sullivan days, our back end spec. picks produced some Ok types ie. Fisher, Hamill.

Where we've really struggled is our front end picks. Most of those have been uninspiring.

I did an experiment with a colleague comparing our drafts from 2000-2013 with St. Kilda's, expecting ours to be far inferior. In fact, given all of the early round picks they had over the early 2000's period, ours isn't that bad in comparison. They had their share of spuds as well.

We then looked at Geelong vs ours and they had a couple of great drafts which built the core of their premiership side. They also had a ton of excellent FS picks, which is where we have had no luck at all, as SOS has been the most notable one, with a truck load of duds, and of course the one guy who would have produced some solid lads ie Sticks, has 3 girls.

Its a good little experiment to do as its so simple to just say our recruiting has been tripe, but its got to be in context.

Honestly, and this will surprise some people, when the draft started, Melbourne were far and away the most successful team early days. In 1987-88 they got some wonderful players (Febey twins in particular).

I agree with quite a few posters here, in that the more picks were get in the top 20-30 the better our strike rate will be as you improve your capacity to get hits in the deeper end of the draft at the top and it gives you a chance to take more risks.

Honestly if Murphy and Gibbs, or anyone else is sooking it up over the Lo Giudice comments, then they truly have no spine.

No player is guaranteed their place at the club and nor should they be. The club is bigger than us all.

I have no issue with those comments and lets be honest it would be remiss of the club not to consider the trading of anyone on our list that will provide us with the ability to better ourselves.

Look at St.Kilda and how they enacted their strategy. We just have to decide our direction and put it into place.

My concern is we have never been able to make the tough decisions because we are afraid they will burn us on the back end.

However I can accept the risk provided the strategy behind it is sound.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Round #4 Carlton vs St. Kilda in NZ: Pre Game prognostications
I simply cannot take you seriously if you don't rate Silvagni's game.

In the 21 games leading up to that 1995 Grand Final, Ablett kicking 122 goals 82 behinds.
He kicked 4 goals or more in 20 of those 21 games. The exception was against Sydney in R2 where he kicked 3.3.
He had on average 9.7 shots on goal over that same period.
The last time he played us, he kicked 4.5.

In the Grand Final - he kicked 0.3. Silvagni was his opponent the entire game.
IMO he was 2nd BOG behind Diesel.

Further to that, remembering back, he had a huge finals series, where he kept Merrett under wraps, gave Carey a bath and then Ablett in the GF.

I still feel his retirement, more than others, left the biggest hole that we haven't filled adequately since.

Watching that 1987 carl vs nth melb replay, one of the great things i noticed was the holding the ball decision and how quick and decisive the decisions were.

no fluffing around. you dived on it you got pinged straight away.

you didnt dispose of the ball straight away or cleanly you were pinged.

it got knocked out in the tackle, bad luck, you got penalised.

The game was far less congested and cleaner.

I think in the obsession of having the ball moving continuously, weve lost alot of the spectacle.

Besides, I honestly dont understand the obsession with the game being constantly played at break neck speed.

Does making the ball movement frantic make the viewing better?

The Sports Desk / Re: 2014 World Cup.
The sad part if you are Brazilian is that Germany didnt even need to hit 80% rat power.

It was awful defending from a group of players who play for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea to name a few.

Honestly, the art of defending has slipped dramatically over the last decade.

Cannavaro at his best was the last of the great ones. Even Italy are producing pedestrian defenders these days.

I still rate the Nesta Cannavaro defensive pairing against Holland in a semi at Euro 2000 as one the greatest defensive efforts ever. That was defending with Coglioni

If Varane and Thiago Silva are the best going around, its a sad indictment on the craft.

Raven, you and me are gong to have some fun. Im a Bears man.

It will be cracking division this season, the NFC North. Even the Lions may bear some teeth.

I am frothing.

Now how's this would be a great road trip. A CSC Super Bowl Tour.

Who can hook up a leave pass?

If you are paying I can get said leave pass.  ;D

Everyone is just copying me and saying go Packers.  :P I like it! haha.

This thread should be a good one through the AFL offseason.

Yet to get to the States, but if I do go, would be keen to see a Packers game and a Penguins (NHL) game. Plus some snowboarding in Canada maybe... ah to dream.

I am the designated brewer for our Monday Superbowl Party, where we usually have 10-20 guys on the beers from 8am to watch the bowl each year.

Three to Four 20L kegs get drained by 3pm usually. And I tend to book the day after off too as I am in no state to be at work.

Well my boy, if you need an emergency or a Sub, im your man. Now that is the way to spend Super Bowl Monday.

The season opener pits the Broncos against the Superbowl winner, Baltimore Ravens.  Peyton Manning's boys are red-hot favourites.

For me, this season will be much more enjoyable.  Last year, although some games were broadcast on OneHD (as they will be this year too), problems with reception meant I had to try various ways of putting tension on the antenna cable to get things working, and often I'd have to give up altogether when the scores were tight at the end of the game.  This year, I have Fox and I can IQ ESPN.

One tip I picked up from a US sports journo is that you have to temper your enthusiasm for sides with 2nd-year QBs such as Colin Kapernick, Andrew Luck and RG3.  He pointed out that Cam Newton had a great first year, but he didn't follow it up well.  The reasons behind this US version of 2nd-year blues are:
  • Coaches tend to keep things very simple for 1st-year QBs, but then they tend to throw the whole playbook at them in the offseason and they find it difficult to cope.
  • Opponents have seen much more of these rookies and know what they want to do on big plays, meaning they're much better at negating them.
He did, however, suggest that Andrew Luck is a football genius and isn't likely to be overawed.

This guy also suggested that there's a strong trend to do away with huddles after each play and the hurry-up offence is more common, meaning more plays throughout the game.

Who do you follow Mav?

Re: your post, thats a fair summation of the situation, but Kaepernick and RG3 have the X-factor tools that make a great QB. RG3's return from his knee will be the issue, especially because he is so daring in how he plays risks his body.

Luck I see has more your Tom Brady/Peyton Manning type. Efficient and smart and will read defensive schemes well.

However, as with any great QB, you need a solid Offensive line to be effective.  A good Line will make an solid QB much better. However Aaron Rodgers is a gun, and even with an average OL, he was still exceptional last season.

Loev it!

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Can we refuse a finals spot?
Like most of us, I'm still fuming and my belief in this club is shot.

I will suppoort them for life, but they will have to work hard to restore my faith in them. I feel totally hollow.

However, if the finals spot becomes available, I will accpet it happily as I believe that everyone of the Carlton faithful deserve something positive, even if we do get blown away, for the crap we have had to endure in the last decade.
