Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 22 2022 Post Game Postulations Carlton vs Melbourne
Walsh, Curnow & Weitering were poor last nite, had they played better it may have been a different result.

Hurt earlier in the year,  coming off 3 years off and hurt earlier in the year.............

100% agree that they were down - but you prob expect that at this time of the year, from them  (Weiters hasnt been right since he came back)

The coaching box also needs looking at, as David King has suggested no extra players behind the ball in those last minutes were costly, all the other teams protecting a lead do it that way and we should have done similar.

Not sure how correct that was - SOJ was sent back for most of the last few mins.  The Melksham mark was 4on2 to our advantage.  Yeah, the numbers at that last contest were even, but that could have been because the spares were otherwise occupied.   King talks a lot and is occasionally on to something, but he does talk out of his backside at times

Geelong mids were holding ours before they even got the ball, while theirs managed to get the ball out, somehow or another (not many of these were remotely like legal disposals, but I'm not going there).
Cripps was well held, and I mean that literally.

I really dont understand how this is allowed to keep happening.  Every game that Cripps is "down" - you watch the replay, and see him being held, with 2 hands, off the footy.  he will get 1 or 2 frees, but compared to the 50 times they get away with it, then the tactic works...  bliscavs played well, but jeez he was allowed to just turn and face cripps and do whatever he liked at a number of stoppages.    and the number of times we would gather the footy and be tackled "as we took possession", or was it just a little before....

and, did we get a single HTB all night??  cats players being spun 360 before they disposed, taking a couple of steps but apparently no prior and as mentioned above - just slinging the ball out of a tackle,  all allowed.   again, reputation helps - liam stocker aint umpired the same way as joel selwood

Geelong are very good at pushing the boundaries,

As were the great Hawks sides.  As were the Tigs (still are, but they arent quite good enough to get away with it anymore).

All the little things - like, holding onto the footy that second longer, when you give away a free,  keeping a guy down in a tackle for an extra beat,  crimping the mark,  holding off the footy a ball ups.... they all add to the extra pressure, but only the good teams are allowed to get away with them.

umpires arent biased, but they do get influenced by reputation.    selwood can do what he likes, and never get penalised - doc fights for a ball with danger, and gets pinged 50 for it - all due to reputation.

Just like the seniors, our game plan is based on winning the ball in the middle. That didn't happen today. Soldo was the difference, as he cut off the supply to our mids and put us on the back foot.

Congratulations to Will Hayes:
37 possession, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 10 clearances from a losing ruck combo. This guy wants back on an AFL list very badly, and we'd be crazy not to pick him. He might play a bit vanilla, but he has been in our best every week. We want gut running: he provides it.

Jack Carroll isn't far away, even though he was much quieter after quarter time. 11 possessions in the first quarter.
23 disposals and 7 clearances.

Otherwise, our defenders were our better players because the forwards didn't see much of it. Williamson and Plowman could hold their hands up high: they contributed nicely.

As for the others, they were well down:
O'Brien: a lot of running, but only 15 possessions. Noe enough to get a recall for me.
Jordan Boyd: reportedly injured, possibly seriously. Got 18 possessions until then.
Liam Stocker: 13 possessions and not impressive. Give him a few more weeks to work on his fitness. The rest will come.
Sam Philp: 13 possessions and 2 goals. Not our worst, especially as he managed 4 clearances as well.
Lochie Fogarty: 13 possessions and 2 clearances. Won't be there in 2023 on this effort.
Jesse Motlop: 12 possessions and 1 goal. Inexperience showed.
Tom de Koning: 15 possessions and 7 clearances, but beaten by a big, strong ruckman. We need a 2nd ruckman next week, but I'm not sure Tom has done enough to be it.
Brodie Kemp: 10 possessions. Very disappointing. Lots some way off at the moment. He isn't holding his marks.

The side will be much stronger next week when Dow comes back, although he may play seniors yet. Honey and Oscar Mac will also make a big difference also. More importantly, our ruck division will be a lot more productive. We play Werribee at Werribee on Saturday.

Thanks mate - great summarry, for those of us who didnt watch

I was there and it was a bit surreal to be honest. The noise wasn't deafening but it certainly reached a crescendo as the quarter went on. I myself kept a lid on it and even when there was 5 min to go and we were 20 odd up I wasn't sure it was in the bag. Been bitten too many times. When the siren went the relief was palpable.

We were jumping around like maniacs after it was evident we were on a roll.  BUT, I was still thinking, in the back of my mind “are we sure they won’t hit back”.  I reckon I relaxed and enjoyed it, and the crowd REALLY got into it, once the Tigs fans started streaming out (about half way thru the last quarter - when, to be honest, I didn’t think it was completely over), then it got really loud and really enjoyable!!

Silvagni took a boundary throw in in the forward line.  Pittonet took most of the centre bounces but De Koning took several in the last quarter.  I don't believe that anyone but Cerra, Kennedy, Cripps and Hewett started in the square for a centre bounce.

It will be interesting to see the adjustments when Walsh comes back  :-\

Jon Ralph: “Carlton isn’t spinning the magnets in the middle. Only 4 mids attended centre bounces alongside the rucks. Hewett, Cripps & Kennedy attended 22 centre-bounces, Cerra 21.”

I can't remember a more dominant contested midfield win than last night, we only had 4 mids rotating through the centre bounces for the whole night and between them they had 121 possessions, 48 contested, 26 clearances and 6 goals. The way they played together was really something to watch, seemed to know where each other was, or supposed to be, no panicked disposals, held on to the ball and found the right outlet. Huge tick for the coaches.
I know it's only round 1 but signs are there.

I was trying to recall if i had seen anyone else at a centre-bounce, other than the big4.... obviously not.   A long time since we have done that - i wonder how many other teams do that??   with Kennedy playing a reasonably reduced time on ground - that means the other 3 must have been in the middle for a looong time...

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Who is in your team for Round 1?
The biggest question is - do we play pitto, tdk and jsos in the one team?

Next is - Doc?? Is he ready

Then - Martin - been poor preseason, but is obv class, which we need

Finally - Ed?  Has ALWAYS been one of our first picked.  Maybe a good sign of our depth and talent if he isn’t picked

The Sports Desk / Re: God help me - the Test Cricket thread

Butler isnt a good keeper and like I keep saying when you have the best gloveman in the world in Foakes there must be some political reason he isnt playing.

They’ve picked butler and woakes for their batting.  You know you are jumping at shadows and don’t trust your top order when you don’t pick ur best keeper and seamer, because you want 7 and 8 sured up.   Real club cricket stuff - where you see the specialist no8
