The Sports Desk / Re: Kyrgios
Good to see Kryg in the final finally. Top line player who can beat anyone on his day. Will turn the flip if given a chance and could easily win this grand slam.

Much of his critics don’t realise his capacity to inflict the chupacabra on his opponents. We shall soon see.

Can anyone highlight what improvements Mick has engineered? The list is the list. Yes. But is there anyone he has generally improved - either by coaching them to be better / smarter players or by positional changes?

Looking at Roos as an example, he has been able to directly influence improvement in the likes of Watts, Dunn and Frawley simply by changing them positionally. And he's been able to improve them as a team, despite losing key personnel up forward. Some hate his style because it's boring and ugly. But I would much rather be tougher to score against and win ugly than to constantly bleed goals in 'honourable' losses.

I just don't get what Mick is trying to implement. And I don't think the players do either.

It's got nothing to do with Malthouse, our skills by hand and foot are deplorable and it's been that way for more than 10 years.
It's at the point now that when one of our players is clear with time to balance up you expect the ball to be turned over, you also expect slow, high handballs, foot passes at bootlaces or on top of the forwards' heads, fumbles under pressure, poor decisions and second guessing, all of which are symptoms of players who just aren't good enough.
There are about 6 or 7 players in our team with reliable foot skills and the rest are hit and miss, mostly miss.
Malthouse can't fix it in a year or two.

How do you explain Roos' impact at Melbourne then? He's stopped the absolute beatings they used to cop, made them tougher to score against, and now they have more belief in winning games. All in half a season!

Has done a poor mans Freo and made it a ugly game of rolling contests, low scoring bore fests...sure it has stopped the beatings but that footy wont win a premiership.

Well, that's what they said about the Swans when he was there. Demetriou labelled them the "ugly ducklings" to which Roos took offence to the insult and made no apologies for the way they played. 2 years later, they were premiers.

I'm not saying Roos will turn Melbourne into a premiership team, I'm just saying he's made significant inroads to changing the way they play, and in essence, changing the results. All in a short space of time.

Those who are calling for MM's head, who would be a good replacement ? Its not as if there's a Roos, Lyon or a Clarkson uncontracted and ready to be poached...

Who knows? But if you were to throw up a name like Ken Hinkley 3 years ago, you'd laugh. There just might be another Ken Hinkley out there somewhere, they just need to be given a chance. Or at least be identified as a potential future premiership coach. Hell, even Paul Roos has made an impact at Melbourne FFS.

I fear we're locked into another 'Paganist' style period. FFS, I don't see the development or structure of a team that has any coherency or team oriented belief.

Malthouse, as good as a coach as he was, just appears to be lagging behind the modern day coaching styles.

Lamentable.

The Sports Desk / Re: Michael Schumacher in a coma
He will have a long, long, long road ahead of him unfortunately. Sincerely hope there isn't too much damage, but it's never a good thing to be out for so long.

All the very best, Michael.

The Sports Desk / RIP Gary Gilmour
Been meaning to post something about this hugely talented former cricketer, but have been busy. I was quite young when I was captivated by cricket (and the Packer War).

Gary Gilmour was a cricketer which I admired. A great talent, but was never serious enough to make the most of it. On song, he was a terrific bowler who could swing it both ways (if conditions suited). His 1975 World Cup Semi Final effort are a great example of this - 6 for 14 off 12 overs (also took 5 for 48 in the Final v West Indies). And on song with the bat, he could thrash the ball to all parts. I would have loved to have seen footage of his 101 v New Zealand in 1976 - 86 in boundaries!

It's a shame his body never allowed him to fulfil his potential. Dodgy ankles. Gout. Perhaps brought on by his care free attitude to fitness and a penchant for a drink or three.

Scored 122 on first class debut for New South Wales in 1972. Then made 52 and took 4-75 on Test debut in 1974 v New Zealand. Only played 15 tests before he joined World Series Cricket - where he couldn't really contribute due to debilitating injuries and health conditions.

Received a liver transplant a little while ago, and has now succumbed to complications. The sad story is added by the tradegy that Gary lost his son to a brain tumour just shortly before his own death. Hopefully the two are re-united again.

Tests: 15
Runs: 483
HS: 101
2HS: 95
50: 3
100: 1
Wickets: 54

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: R13 : Carlton drowned by the Hawks
Carrazzo was very good last night. Not sure why he's copping it TBH.

I think he was adequate, i wouldn't say he was very good. He didn't really have a huge impact on the game, apart from that turnover which worked against him.

He was far from alone, but getting BOG from both sides according to Ch 7 is a complete joke.

Yeah, I don't agree that he was BOG. But I thought he tipped the scales to the v.good because his defensive game dramatically reduced his opponent's influence. While he may not have had a huge impact offensively, he still managed to get plenty of it, and use it well.

Same old story when it come to crucial shots at goal. Waite, Gibbs, Watson etc have just got to nail them.

Speaking of Watson, what a liability. He's killing us. McLean is junk. Just treads water and that's it.

Happy with Murph, Gibbs, Casboult, Judd games.

But the usual overall haphazard effort. Tired of it.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 12 : Blues Robbed By Cats (Despair & Teeth-Grinding)
The thread heading is a disgrace - we were not robbed by the Cats - they were always going to win
The cats list have clean superb skills plus heart
We have messy poor skills with occasional heart lapses
Did you watch the game with your eyes shut? The Cats butchered the ball as much as we did. They were off their game a fair bit of the night - which was caused by our intensity.

Totally agree stickman.....said exactly the same thing at 3/4 time. Cats were dog awful at times tonight, but on the flip side, also had patches of brilliance we can only wish for in our lads.

It's damn hard to keep that entire team down for the whole game. Just too many quality players to combat. Having a target up forward like Hawkins is pretty handy.

Gibbs was awesome tonight. Best game I've seen him play TBH.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 12 : Blues Robbed By Cats (Dispair & Teeth-Grinding)
What did Mark Stevens say?

Dismissed the Menzel free kick as "wasn't there", and within minutes of discussing it with Duck, he 'conceded' it was "line ball". Wanker. Went onto say he would grill Malthouse at his presser by asking him why he didn't move Jamison on Tommahawk earlier. Yeah, what courage ::)

It ended up with the tool not asking him that question (some other journo did), but you could hear the dopey git speak to Malthouse by making a statement rather than ask a question. Malthouse just looked at him with arms out stretched and giving him a "you are an idiot" look.

Mark Stevens is a real 'hero'
