Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 12: Post Game Passion: Carlton vs GWS
We had a much-maligned forward back in the sixties who was the whipping boy of the day.  When he was switched to the backline he won a Brownlow - GORDON COLLIS.
He had similar attributes to Jones.   Moving a non-productive forward to the backline was a far more common move back then.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2017 Rd 7: After Match Analysis: Carlton vs Collingwood
I have said it plenty of times, he is my ALL TIME, yes ALL TIME, favorite Carlton player. If you had em all lined up against the wall to pick a side, on appearance you wouldn't pee on Simmo if he was on fire. But knowing what I know after 15 years and 260 plus games, I would pick him first every day of the week and twice on Sundays. The term heart and soul is sometimes used very loosely, however it is very apt for young Simmo.

I may be wrong but I seem to remember a very new to the club, young Simmo and perhaps DeLuca kicking a swag of goals in a night game at the G to absolutely stun the filth supporters.  I recall their supporters sitting stunned at the siren probably thinking "What the hell happened?  And how?"

Lack of parenting is a tough one. Times have changed a lot.  It is now rare that kid get two parents at home at night,  they are more regularly coming from broken families and a constantly on their screens.  It is rare for both parents not to be working as housing (including rent) is so expensive.  The responsibility and pressure on kids is much greater than it was only 20-30 years ago.   Added to this is a rapidly changing online environment that a huge amount of parents don't understand, let alone know how to regulate with their kids.

Then we get migrants from a background that is impovished or war torn and expect them to fit into our society.  It isn't that easy.  I remember the non english speaking Greeks at primary school - it takes a generation or so to get into the swing of Australia.

There is no easy solution to any of this,  but it requires a tougher bail, parole, post release support as well as education and support of people vulnerable to the justice system.

Yes we have many more single parent families, duel income families, immigrants etc. but I taught a family of girls who on Friday nights were consistently lined up against the house passage wall and who in turn had a gun placed under their chin by their dad while he asked each one to give him a reason not to pull the trigger.  Very few worse cases I would think.  But those girls all became excellent students and great people.  It took just one parent, the mother, to put in time with them to succeed where many now fail miserably today.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: RIP Phil Gibbs
So sad to hear of Phil's passing.  :-[  :-[  :-[  I think that I am right in saying that Phil was involved in the nights Carlton held at the Melbourne Town Hall where the players performed various short acts.  Great nights but I was only about 7 or 8 so my memory may be a little challenged.  Phil was either the compere or joint compere - I was more interested in the players.

Great stuff Tassy Devil.

Agree with another poster that Weitering looks timid. Seems to be relying on talent and judgement at the minute with less than required intent. Of recent times the only time I've seen him really seen him seem to enjoy his footy was when he was given the forward line gig.

Some weeks ago I was severely criticized when I said that Weitering 'dropped his head' a few times.  Now his timidity is showing out further and others are seeing it.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 18: Post Game In depth Analysis and Soul Searching: Carlton vs Sydney
Just roared down the highway from Mackay to Rockhampton towing the van to get to a c.park that was the only one with a site available, planning to find a club/pyb with Foxtel but as I set up I hear the game being played.  The bloke in the next site is a Swans supporter so left the setting up to the missus and joined him watching his computer screen.  Could not believe my luck.  The Blues going well and the bloke is very convivial, gets to 8 minutes to go and the computer battery runs out - end of show and the start of a new show as he pays out on his wife for flattening the battery reading a book earlier on.  I crept away.  Thanks for the final score.

AFL players don't coast.  It's a weak argument for players that look laconic.

I can vividly recall screamong to Jezza to tun faste,r as he seemed to just lope along.  But he always got there and was never caught.  You are right, some players seem to run urgently to get there and others have a different style.  Certainly some just cannot run fast but make up for it in other ways - Greg Williams !
