I don't mind the analysis, but I think he is over simplifying what we see vs dont see.
Sure, we are utilising forward handball, and being proactive. I dont think we are stopping this strategy, I think it stops working the same, because our opponents are doing something to one stop the run and then two, keep us in the contest, or clear from being able to run.
Richmond players last night were preventing our tackled players from getting up and contributing to the next chain of handballs which stops the run. Its like we just get held down, and thats it, hes out of the next chain, and after doing that, they get up and run off as soon as posession flips, and we are getting cut up outside corridor. Inside its fine, but teams just arent using the corridor, and setting up for long kicks.
When the game was hot last night, we were kicking long to contests, and I noted a couple of opportunities where we probably should have looked to open up the fat side of the ground, but our team was staying compact. A deliberate tactic probably to prevent the opposition from opening us up, but when we have the ball in hand, sometimes after playing one mode for a bit, you need to change up and switch to more open play. the opposition wont expect it, but it requires a bit of nous and comms.
I would suggest this issue precedes Teague by several years, and if that's true, I'd say the issues are deeper than the coach.
What do you think it is Paul? I'm not saying you're wrong, but just about the only common aspects of the team from days gone by... is Cripps. Coaches, list management, admin, players have all been turned over. Understandably a culture of struggle and losing can impact youngsters as they come into the side. I suspect Byrce Gibbs and Marc Murphy were introduced to a culture of struggle, loss and division. Is that's what's happened with our group...and if that's the case is that also affecting player retention.
Too many smiles at the end of the game last night, not just with Curnow. Fitness....we were done by just after half-time. Size and strength....we're carrying a few light youngsters (and a couple of oldies) at the moment. That will improve but a large part of our list are a few years away from that maturity. And chief of all...the inability of coaches and on-field leaders to stem that run of goals in the third term.
How many more years are we going to see this crap.
I'm now wondering which player(s) will be leaving at seasons end!!! 3 of our best left last year!!! Players of that calibre don't leave unless there is something drastically wrong at the club.
Young has to come in and play at full-back, he isn't much chop anywhere else.
Yes, Pittonet should be recalled to lighten the load around the ground and in the ball-ups.
As for Lemmey, how much longer can he remain on the list if he hasn't looked like gracing the seniors ?? We all need to know what we have with him so it's time to give him a chance because he will certainly stretch the young Kangaroo defence.
I can see another change with a small coming in somewhere.
IN : Young, Lemmey, Pittonet, Boyd
OUT : McKay (inj), Kemp (inj), White, Williams
By the way, 12 players contributed a mere 5 tackles between them against WCE (seven of them had zero tackles), that is completely & utterly unacceptable on every possible level. Do that against a higher ranked team and we will always come off second best.
Hard to tackle when you have the ball in your hands!!!
I tend to agree with a lot of the criticism. I also think, like a few of his team-mates, he's a little down on confidence. Missing a year with injury is probably also a little bit harder to come back from at his age than when you're younger. 'Avoiding contact' is a thing you don't attach to Docherty at his best. But as it comes for all of us, his best is behind him.
Does he still have something to offer?
I'm not sure just what is the best way to use him. He's finding the ball. He's gaining territory. He gained 671 metres with his disposals last weekend. That was the best of both teams and over 100metres more than the second best which was Zac Williams (which may tell a tale about territory vs impact) Yep, The problem was that the territory gained was countered by disposal that saw the ball coming straight back the other way.
It's a dilemma. It may be his best contribution would be as a "playing" assistant coach at VFL level.
Doc is well past his best and in his final year but FMD i wish we ripped into others on the list as much as this bloke. Fans puts their arms around Harry and fair enough and also most support a highly paid bloke who cant control his drug habit yet no such going easy on Docherty who has heaps more runs on the board. I agree his last game last year and his 4 this year have been below standard but he is hardly on his own. How do the likes of McGovern's, Saad, Acres, Motlop, Williams, Haynes, Fogerty, Fantansa, Durdin, Young and i could go on get away with sub standard performances year after year?
That's one group of over rated footballers if ever ive seen one
And lets not forget our so called A grader 'Leaders' in Charlie, Cerra, Walsh and even Cripps who's salaries should have them being a lot more accountable for what they have provided us in 2025
Isn't it the coach's responsibility to get the most out of his players?
Maybe the players are sending a message. Why did we get rid of Kennedy & Owies and bring in Haynes & Evans??? Coincidently we have 2 players suffering from mental health issues and apparently 1 other not named??? Something is up.
Looks to me that they players are saying look we can play (1st half) then not interested (2nd Half). Something is very wrong here. I like Voss, but it's usually the coach that pays the price in these situations. Either the players don't want to play for him, or our game plan doesn't suit. Something has to happen soon!!!
I think there is a real concern on peaking too early as it's a long season, Voss mentioned this after the Richmond loss. It looks like we are easing (very)slowly into form. Yeah, a lot are down on form. Just hope they start to find their form soon. Also, we don't want to bring in the kids too early.
