btw., The media is trying to spin the arrival of the Chinese Navy as a surprise event, but the media confuse a lack of public notification and politicians actively denying knowledge with the ADF not knowing and also not informing PM&C. It's Clickbait.

Our E7/A Wedgetail capabilities are way beyond anything an AEWAC or Orion is capable of, but Five Eyes is never going to announce what they know and what they don't know. China might well have surprised Virgin, but I assure you it didn't surprise the ADF even if the ADF says it was surprised.

Like Churchill and Engima, you never ever tell the opposition what you know or don't know.

But to give you an idea, the E7/A gave the Jindalee Over the Horizon Radar (JORN) the kybosh. I've heard that just one Wedgetail E7/A has the capability to surveil all of the Ukraine, Belarus and Russian conflict zone and it can do it from well within the safety of EU airspace. it's so impressive, the US are buying them to replace the AEWAC. Our selling planes to the USA is of far more strategic importance to the the USA than the USA selling us Subs.

NZ need to figure out what side of the fence they want to jump on and be part of the AUKUS agreement or get used to Chinese Warships being part of the scenery in the Tasman.
NZ is already part of Five Eyes though, but it's staunch anti-nuclear stance is hurting it a bit. I doubt NZ can depend on Trump any more than Australia can, so they best be looking at local capabilities.

AUKUS is fine, the capability the submarines bring to patrol and defend our massive border is significant, it should have happened decades ago!

The biggest problem we have with China building infrastructure in the Sth Pacific is that it collects the one thing it can't reliably collect by remote surveillance, economic data. Get the accurate trade and economic data and it delivers levers to pull.

FWIW, our Feds should never have allowed Dan to sign over the ports, the Feds should have funded a port upgrade way before any rail or road deals, but the NSW dominated parliament was asleep at the wheel much like when it allowed Chinese companies to build private big Jet capable airstrips in WA.
The problem is NZ wont allow nuclear vessels in their waters, NZ were all for AUKUS but backed off when their biggest trade partner China intimidated them with the China- Solomon Islands security agreement and the NZ government want security and protection but dont want to invest in it or upset China.
re: Trump.....couldnt give a flying feck about NZ and probably couldnt tell you where they were on the map anyway unless they had rare earth material either which is the only interest he has in Ukraine.

Like Churchill and Engima, you never ever tell the opposition what you know or don't know.

This reminds me of another 'secret' from the time.
Radar.
Germans didn't understand how their planes were getting shot down at night, so the 'secret' was british pilots were eating carrots which improved their eye sight at night and that gave them upper hand. A myth that persists to this day.
In reality, it was simply used to explain away their superiority in the skies without disclosing they had developed radar to help them see instead. Everyone bought it hook, line and sinker.
