I can't make sense of the homeless situation in Australia. I notice a few people camping under bridges around the city, many are plastering facades with signs saying homeless, need help, anti-police, anti-vax conspiracies, begging at intersections. I start to feel some pity and empathy, then on the next trip past I see them standing there holding a sign begging for money for rent while holding a full sized fresh looking carton of smokes, a donation maybe, but perhaps not! To me that is not an issue of being destitute, it's a mental health issue, it can't be fixed with income or welfare payments.
This is a very different issue to the homeless women some I know help out, sleeping in cars sometimes with kids, pooling resources so that one can babysit while another gets a day of casual work here or there. That is a blight on our society.
Trump would label them all vagrants and lobby for them to be deported, or hidden from view somewhere, certainly well out of physical contact. His supporters would do well to remember it could be them one day, it could be any of us!
