Interesting indeed!

Ranked 16th for overall posessions.
Ranked 9th for Tackles.
Ranked 3rd for Contested Posessions.

Those were the two stats that stood out to me regarding where we currently sit.

Simpson a bit of an unsung hero in that write up.

Interesting that Walker was 4th in the AFL for metres gained.  Hard to argue against MM's shift to Walker and Simmo running the ball out of defence rather than Duigan, Yarran and Laidler doing the honours.

The contested possessions is interesting. Looks like we can get the ball but then can't use it very well??

I reckon it's easy to argue against it. Walker was exposed time and time again on the last line of defence, most often in important games. A lot of his metres gained are from uncontested receives across half back. He was far more damaging before the oppostion figured out to drag him back to the last line. Very much a weak link in our defence in the second half of the season.
Ignorance is bliss.

As has been noted by a number of special comments guys, Geelong doesn't prioritise winning the ball in stoppages.  It sets up with a loose man behind the ball so they can win the ball back on the half-back line and then work it forward.  The ability to win the ball in stoppages is great, but you have to be able to find targets on the HF line.  As we only had 1 true key forward target (Waite), we couldn't really hope to go over the top of the HF line.

WHAT WENT RIGHT.
They made the finals. It may not have been they was the Blues envisaged as the start of the season but they made an impact none-the-less. Carlton produced a big comeback to beat arch-rivals Carlton in the elimination final to show they weren't there to make up the numbers. Andrew Walker's revival will also be looked at as a major positive. For so long the No.2 draft pick was looked down on but in 2013 he produced a season worthy of his draft number.
WHAT WENT WRONG.
Technically, they finished ninth. At the start of Round 23, they weren't even assured of finishing where they did. Mick Malthouse was meant to herald a new age for the Blues that had only won one final in the last 11 years. In Round 10 the Blues sat in sixth but that was the high point as they struggled to string wins together. Two wins in the final five games didn't help their cause. Injuries didn't help with Marc Murphy, Chris Judd, Andrew Carrazzo and Jarrad Waite all spending time on the sidelines.

BEST & FAIREST.
The Blues will hold their night of nights on Tuesday, October 1. Rejuvenated defender Andrew Walker should enter as a warm favourite after an outstanding season that some believe was worthy of All Australian inclusion. Despite an injury-interrupted season new captain Marc Murphy will also be amongst the top couple of players along with Lachie Henderson. Henderson's versatility was a key factor for Carlton and he is sure to have figured in the votes.
THE LIST.
ELITE: Marc Murphy, Chris Judd
BIG IMPROVERS: Andrew Walker
GOING, GOING: Jeremy Laidler, Eddie Betts
GONE: Marcus Davies, Luke Mitchell, Patrick McCarthy, Rhys O'Keefe, Frazer Dale, Andrew Collins, Aaron Joseph
TRADE BAIT: Chris Yarran, Shaun Hampson
WHAT THEY NEED.
The key posts around the ground could certainly do with some help. Jarrad Waite holds down centre half-forward, Michael Jamison is a star full-back and Lachie Henderson can do it at either end. However, after that the Blues stocks are a little thin. A key defender and key forward are undoubtedly high on the club's wish list. They have a mid-first round draft selection, which should see them nab a talented young player but it will most likely be a small.

WHERE ARE THEY ON THE PREMIERSHIP CLOCK?
Mick Malthouse famously said the Blues list had the makings of a premiership team. Unfortunately, that came back to bite the coach by the end of the season. Carlton possess some of the best top-end talent in the competition but severely lack depth around the ground. If the delistings are anything to go by it might take a couple of seasons for the Blues to reach a level they could compete with the big boys.

Taking into account the true nature of our list, the fact that it fell away in depth out side the top 10 or 15, we undoubtedly deserve a pass mark. I'm proud the team for performing as they have this year. there was consistent improvement as the year went on culminating in finals win.

The only consistency I noticed was how inconsistent we were  :-\

Still struggle to beat the top sides, still lose dumb games to sides below us.
Still struggling to win more than 3 in a row.
Still don't have a forward line to match the best.

Surprised how anyone can say it was a pass, we finished 6th*

(*= 9th)
Excuses year 1, blame year 2, contract extention year 3........

Pretty simple conclusion to be drawn really - 2013 re-confirmed what we already knew, or strongly suspected, about our playing list at the end of 2012. If we did make any progress it was very very small and, well, nothing at all to get excited about tbh. Big change is required in terms of new players and in the approach of those we retain.

This year was all about MM and his assistants finding out about the list, and fortunately a finals appearance helped that process along significantly. No excuses now - the change process is under way already and I'm very interested to see how it all unfolds in the trade and draft periods.

Was interested to read RR's summary of our VFL guys in conjunction with this too - I thought it was a very good report - bottom line, a more optimistic overall assessment than I expected re. players possibly coming through, when compared to MM, who did not seem very enthusiastic at all about anyone there.

We got into the finals in 8th as the side we replaced cheated to get there. No ifs or buts on that. Those same cheats used their unfair advantage to overrun us very late in games after we had big leads. Without drugs we win 13 H & A games.

Season is half a pass mark if that's possible as our consistency was the equivalent of a yo-yo. Great, exciting, hard at times, weak, soft and mentally inept other times. We have it but there is still a way to go in regards to culture as well as consistent work ethic and attitude.

Its a fair summary of where we are at.....coach said we were top 4 material and chance for the flag....neither eventuated and we are a long way off the top teams IMO in terms of depth...you look at the Northern Blues and we have nothing of any note coming through and Malthhouse needs to build depth into a list before we will be any real chance to finish top 4..

Outside of a few games it was a very ho hum season. That's a worry. I'm curious about our membership count next year.

That's a strong reason why we should get very busy in the draft/trades and off season generally.
