Your request albeit a simple one to ask, is not a simple one to provide.

As suggested earlier, everyone has an agenda so an unbiased opinion is a bit of a unicorn.

The best thing you can do is do your own research.
LP's excessive response in regards to numbers re solar, does show you some insight into what you would want to look at for yourself.
That is, how much power can the average house generate with solar?
How much power does the average house use?
How many of these average houses actually produce power with solar?

When you run simple figures like that, expand it out, you see some of the media/politically presented figures don't add up.

Expand that out to non-residential areas like commercial and industrial it becomes a joke.

Take that a step further and work out how much power is required to get the elements/components out of the ground, across the globe and to your house. How green is it and how much power are we really saving?

I've got no issues with people doing their thing and getting solar. I had solar on my last property and am contemplating it on mine now.....but thats not to save the world, just reduce my energy bill.

If this debate makes someone feel depressed, hopeless or disillusioned it not the fault of the topic, the right emotion to feel would be anger at how you're being grifted for profit with no real hope of achieving a solution from any one strategy.

We need orders of magnitude more emissions reduction, every strategy should be running in parallel.

I've been pretty consistent on this stuff.
When looking at energy sources there is a common trend.
We mine something until it runs out and generally kill the planet in the process.
Even with solar and batteries etc, we are mining for a relatively rare resource in lithium....which will see the same fate eventually.

So....
If we could use the most abundant element in the universe, you're never going to run out. Problem solved....mostly.
So why do anything else? Future proof the world by following this path and developing it as required.

I don't have a problem that it's done for profit, but I don't want them selling it to me on a good for the planet / bad for the planet spin that these entities throw out.

The modern technology they back is unequivocally good, and the technologies they oppose are generally unequivocally good, they primarily differentiate based on the content of their wallets.

Well i know why its done. The same reason anything is done.....people put money over the planet.

That will only be acceptable for so long.

Even the rich fat cats will realise that its no point sitting on a pile of cash if you've got no planet to use it on.

China is the biggest producer of Rare Earths and it buys mainly from Myanmar but thats more to stockpile and on sell for profits and to deny the West access. BHP doesnt deal in rare Earths and have pivoted to copper to help supplement profits given Iron Ore is having a holiday thanks to the Chinese economy being on the slide. Rio have some interest but its low volume stuff and I think Fortescue own a mine that hasnt been used for a while and plan to refine Rare earths overseas somewhere.
Agree...people put money over the planet and the likes of Twiggy Forrest put Dividends over everything else, he earns a couple of million every day but doesnt draw a salary from Fortescue so its all about his Dividend payouts...

I almost agree but I see the mega rich more like bond villains who want to destroy the world but haven’t thought it through that it leaves them with nothing either…

The more I know people the less faith I have in them.

Earlier we had some discussion about not trusting the advice or reports of billionaires, when they portray themselves as the cure to bureaucracy's ills.

When big big money is involved do not trust politics, opinion or the people who profit from either, just trust the numbers but not necessarily how the numbers are presented, be skeptical. Sometimes the most basic cursory investigation exposes the folly or deception.

Right on queue, although not specific to energy but analogous to the concept above, we have a billionaire telling us he can do the SRL better, cheaper, faster and with more certainty. I doubt it, I gravely doubt it, and unless great liability and risk is built into the contracts with certain penalties for failure, it would be a grave mistake to change the management.

Privatisation of too many major infrastructures just creates a tenancy that delivers great profit to the landlord, we all pay. Infrastructure and essential services should not be "for profit"!

The same critical risk structure should be applied to energy debate, make providers liable for not delivering on promises, do not let them profit at your risk!
