Does this test make it to the weekend?

Lyon off to a flyer, it's amazing what a bit of spot retention motivation does as opposed to welded in place selection!

England are dead set psychopaths, 3-43 on a batsmen's paradise, and they are playing reverse slog sweeps to get off the mark.

I see England's constant complaining has managed to influence the 3rd Umpire and sway the benefit of the doubt in their favour, Boland and Carey unlucky not to have Root's wicket in the 10th over, or ripped off from another perspective.

It's a bit like watching a Geelong or Hawthorn football game!

re Root: That ball hit the ground imo and was the right decision,batsman has to get the benefit of any doubt.
 Carey himself should have been out yesterday but the technology got it wrong but its all part of the game and generally the decisions even out over the series.

I think that the use of technology to aid the umpires has largely removed the benefit of doubt favouring the batsman.  If there is the slightest doubt, and DRS is far from perfect, the decision should be 'not out'.

I'm not sure what the fuss was about the Jamie Smith not out.  Regardless of whether the ball brushed his gloves or helmet, Khawaja clearly took the ball on the half-volley and he signalled that he was unsure if it was a catch.

Khawaja's ability vs. spin is a myth.  Pathetic dismissal and takes the foot off the throat....then exposes Green who is playing like a bag of sh.. at the moment and must be dropped.  Caught off a half volley, seen enough, next.

When you watch this morning rubbish tactics, sh1zen bowling to sh1zen batsmen, you can understand why people have become disillusioned with Test Cricket. FFS, it's like D-Grade cricket tactics, and it's being lauded on the broadcast by former captains like it is revolutionary!

Also, how Green topped the IPL auction can only be a confirmation that marketing spin and corruption dominate performance.

We seem to have some idea what we're doing to top order batsmen, but no idea how to deal with tail enders. Look at the runs Archer has made this summer!

We are scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of leadership and tactics, Lillee or Hughes would destroy the tail order with just one or two bouncers, now these crap tactics have proliferated to the degree we are seeing the bulk of deliveries in the bowlers half.

Three tests done and we've won them all.
However, a lot of our players and tactics remain questionable.
[1] Green: he has the potential to be anything and his field is brilliant. But, he doesn't bowl enough. He really needs to bowl a lot more and become a proper front line bowler. I think he has that potential, but he is just not developing his bowling.
His batting is similar: so much potential, so little shown for it.
However, the selectors seem to be picking him on potential, not results. He could be our Jacques Kallis, but he isn't.

[2] A spinner or two to replace Lyon. Lyon had a hamstring and may miss both remaining tests. But who do we replace him with?
I like Tanveer Sangha, a young leggie who can spin it both ways. Is he ready? Good question.
Matthew Kuhnemann has seemed to have dropped out of sight since his 'throwing' controversy. He is a good left hand finger spinner.
Todd Murphy appeared to be the heir apparent, but you don't hear of him much lately.
Adam Zampa? He has never set the longer games on fire, even if he is excellent at the shorter forms.
Australia pitches generally do not favour spinners - drop in pitches don't wear as much as the older ones did. But it means that we have fewer obvious answers.

Swepdon, if you want a leggies, Rocciocelli (sp) WA is having an excellent shield session.

England batting properly except for their horrible get out shots when they ran out of patience looked much more threatening than the first two tests.

AUS team for boxing day - In: Smith, Neser, Murphy. Out: Inglis (for Smith), Cummins (rested), Lyon (inj).  Green lucky - too many changes, Usman lucky - boys club means he survives instead of Ingliss.  Unlucky again - Webster.

Agree on the Ins and the reasoning.
I reckon Bethell will come into the top 6 for England and they may rest Carse for one of Potts or Fisher who are both more traditional county line and length seam bowlers. McCullum has two years to run on his contract at decent money so it's going to be an expensive decision to sack him.
I'd expect a more likely outcome to be that he develops bazball version 2 which will be a throttle back from what we have seen over the past couple of years.
Plenty of criticism back in England about the lack of county cricket played by the incumbent test players who play a lot of white ball cricket but don't turn out for the longer game either by choice or by fixturing of short format tournaments either home or overseas. Darren Lehmann who coaches Northants says he hasn't seen a selector or key personnel at any of their games or had a phone call about any of his players.
McCullum has been running his own boys club and I reckon that's going to change when England return home..

I'd play Richardson (genuine pace) because I don't think Mahli Beardman is ready.  I like Perry and ONeill but they aren't express and I think we lack some real anxiety inducing pace.
Webster for Green. Enough.  Perform or get the sars.
Murphy is an outstanding spinner with a lot of tricks and deserves a go...sides are always stronger with solid spin options.  Rocchicoli is another possibility.
