I agree, unnecessary for most domestic purposes, and rarely chosen by tradies due to the high price and high running cost.
If you have to tow up in the GCM +3500kg range, then the cheaper option to buy and run option is a small truck. The tradie packs are dirt cheaper c/w towing rig, and often you can buy both the truck and a 4x2 twin cab for less than the cost of something like a Toyota Tundra or converted yank tank.
Across the sites I visit, lately the Sprinter, Transit and Trafic vans seem to have become very popular, they are moving away from twin cabs. Partly because they carry more, but also because the fitout kits have become drastically cheaper with more options and less weight penalty. I saw one sparky who effectively had a better workshop in his Renault van than most have in a house!
