AFLW SEASON 2024

Lining up against the Hawks to kick off the season on Sunday. No Brooke Vickers or Tarni Brown and of course Erone is out for the season. Vickers pace in particular will be missed as we seem to be a hard working team lacking dash and polish. Captain's run on Saturday morning is an open session for those interested.

The Shinboners had a comfortable win to take out their first premiership.  They have established a pretty high benchmark and it’s going to be a challenge to match them.

Apparently they got ahead of themselves last season and the girls were trash talking the Lions about their post game celebrations when they were well ahead only to be overrun. They’ve learnt to walk the talk.
It's still the Gulf of Mexico, Don Old!

I missed the game but the Brizvegas v Cows prelim was a cracker, it showed how far behind our club is and the work that needs doing.
Let’s go BIG !

Its an indictment on our footy club that our girls have achieved nothing.  We started before most of them, and whilst most of our players got poached, something went wrong, and we should have jagged a flag.  I know Covid derailed our girls best chance, but honestly, thats an excuse.

It is and it’s not.
We were runners up and then the following season were on top before the season got cancelled, if I recall correctly.
Then we had our list plundered with no compensation, remember the compensation pick for losing Prespakis ?
Pick in the 30’s…
Let’s go BIG !

Yes and no.

We almost won a flag, making the GF, but up against the rampaging Crows who were not just a state side, but a state side that included NT as well.
They've won 3 flags, and lost another one. They were on a different level.

Add to that Brisbane, who were also a state side. They've won 2 and lost 3.
Freo and GWS despite having a state team to start with have achieved nothing also.

Western Bulldogs managed to snag one in year 2.
Melbourne managed to lose one and win one.
Both started same time as us.
Both recruited better than us IMO.
Neither suffered the mass exodus of players we did with new teams being introduced.

Collingwood started the same time as us and have achieved SFA. Haven't made a GF yet.

Kangas were an anomoly of sorts, they put together a great side aided by Tassie recruiting.
They have underachieved IMO winning 1 and losing 1.

No other new team has got close.

The AFLW system was rigged to interstaters from the get go as they were all state teams.
Victoria had to split the state into 4 to begin with and simply couldn't compete.

That being said, we were top 4 when covid cancelled the season and anything is possible. I do think we were the 4th best team from that 4 though.

SHOULD we have won something? Probably not.
COULD we have won something? Anything is possible.

We mismanaged a few things.
The AFL enabled opposition clubs to take anything of value without any kind of comparable compensation (eg We lost Prespakis - AFLW MVP and Georgia Gee to bombers - our compensation was that we got to 'keep' our 1st round pick - which i think was pick 21!)

Pick 21 for losing Prespakis AND Gee. That wasn't in addition to our first round pick, that was our first round pick.
How is that fair??

We got pick 25 for trading Grace Egan!

So yeah.
AFL screwed us.
We could've been better, but i don't think we have been terrible in our management, just not perfect.
