Rookies and Kids Snapshot for 2014

29 - Heath Scotland -  Games 264 – Turn 34 in July

Great servant for the club, came to us when we were at our lowest point.

37 – Jarrad Cachia – Games 14 – Turns 23 in May

Much better the second time around. Good insurance should we lose some midfield players. Must provide protection for our young players at VFL level.

Cameron Wood – Games 64 – Turns 27.

Insurance and now with Duigan being place on the injured list should be elevated. 204 cms can mark and kick for goal. Just not aggressive enough but maybe a year out will give him a bit of hunger.

Ciaran Byrne – 187cm Irish Speedster.
Ciaran Sheehan – 188cm Irish Speedster.
Luke Reynolds – 188cm Forward.
Blain Johnson – 187cm Forward

Patrick Cripps – 193cms ball winning midfielder.

Not expecting to see much of Cripps in 2014, big bodied mids often take a couple of seasons see Kouta, Watson and Kennedy. Plus I think he grew late as well so I doubt he’d have much fitness or core strength. Needs a couple of pre seasons and VFL time.

Cameron Giles – 195cm Key Position

Good size and seems to have very good agility. May see him this season as his weight indicates he could handle the crash and bash as a third tall.

Nick Holman – 189cm inside mid.

Good size for a mid and has that junk yard dog mentality. Get his to hang round with Mitch a bit. Again a year or two at VFL level get some strength and maybe then.

Cachia is good backup material but probably needs to find a new role to stay at the club as we have so many mids and ones who are quicker and bigger.
Like to see him played in the backpocket for the NB's and see if he can fill that difficult to fill role..

Wood....will probably get some senior games and challenge Warnock for his spot.....

Byrne....wont make it IMO....too light and didnt appear to enjoy the physical side of the international rules series.
Sheehan....hope for another Touhy
Reynolds....like his skill level and I think this kid could be the real deal....love lefties who can kick goals.
Johnson......bit of a goer and a robust type of player...not as silky as Reynolds but maybe capable of playing in a few more positions

Cripps/Giles/Holman......all will get senior games at some time during the season.....Mick doesnt mind giving kids a go and I think Cripps in particular will get some games early.

What is in the water he is drinking. Peptides ? Must be those chickens filled with growth hormones and anti-biotics. Not like the chickens we ate many many moons ago. They actually tasted better because they grew at a natural rate. ;D
This digital world is too much for us insects to understand.

That's why I only eat chemical free chook, Green Stick. Don't go near Steggles or Inghams, a totally unnatural product.

Cripps only 192cm according to http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-31/21-days-to-the-draft-meet-patrick-cripps

(taller than Fev and Kouta!)

193cm according to Carlton FC web site: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/player-profile/patrick-cripps

We'll end up with a 200cm inside mid who can pinch hit in the ruck!
Finals, then 4 in a row!

Don't we already have one of those in Matty Kreuzer? :P
Just glad I'm old enough to have enjoyed the 1995 Grand Final

It will be interesting to see how Cripps turns out: it is looking like he will be taller than of our previous mids, as he has Kouta already covered. Setanta or Aisake? Both moved more like mids than ruckmen.
In my lifetime I have seen Big Nick and Mike Fitzpatrick as ruckmen. Cripps has then just about covered too. It says a lot about how heights of players have changed in the last 30 years. Big Nick wouldn't even be tall enough to play key position, let alone first ruck.
A few years ago we recruited Sporn as a future key defender, even though he was as thin as Bootsma and not overly tall. He was expected to grow into the role. He never did, but that was the way we were thinking. I prefer what we appear to be doing now - recruit someone who is already big enough (even if it is a "just") and if they grow, then we are better off.

The Sheik and myself have being wanting this style of recruiting for 15 years and its driven us both insane over the journey and my negative views on our recruiting dept over the years have been underpinned by this madness of expecting undersized players to develop into proper sized players. .....
From the start you need to recruit players who have the size and frame to compete from day 1...forget this idea that thin little bodies can be grown into hulking KP players.....one of Shane OSullivan's infamous quotes was that Trent Sporn could grow into the CHB we need......
Shane...what about the radical idea of recruiting a proper specialist CHB...

Cripps, Holman, Giles....all the right size for their specialist roles........

Cheating with undersize players or bit part players never works

Didn't Shane Hughes get demoted as recruiter?

Wayne Hughes was demoted....swapped roles with Shane Rodgers and then we recruited Luke Williams to do their job for them,  then he didnt like the job anymore and quit.

Aren't Wayne and Shane just getting the guys MM tells 'em to?

As usual, it's a huge hallelujah from me Brother Elwood, that stupid recruiting philosophy has held us back for some time and its a relief to see the new broom come in and start rectifying the problem.
