We were playing a VFL like team which probably made Binns a bit more comfortable, I gave him a vote and would persist with him as we look more mobile with him working around the midfield.

Sorry EB but West Coast would flog a combined VFL team.  They were in front of Brisbane at three quarter time and lost by only 19 points, should have beaten Essendon, Richmond and North, and they smashed St Kilda.
DJ..They have won one game and have a percentage of 65%....they are rubbish and have been for a while now and rightly belong on the bottom of the ladder and their coach got it right calling them pathetic at the contest at 1/4 time.
Some of the worst fumbly, braindead football I have ever seen from an AFL team.

I should also mention Nick Haynes.  When we picked him up I thought that he’d provide injury cover but, after a shaky start, he has consolidated his place as a very reliable and consistent member of our defensive combination.

His intercepting and spoiling are elite, his disposal by foot is very good and he complements our other defenders very well.  An astute addition to the list by Nick Austin.

I think his contested marking is good but his disposal by foot is ordinary and we need more elite kicks coming out of defense imho.

His disposal efficiency is a tad under 79% ... and that includes a lot of rushed kicks under pressure.  Jack Silvagni gets a lot of praise for his ball use but his disposal efficiency is just under 75%.  Of all the defenders we've used this season, only Weitering is using the ball better than Haynes.  So, yes, we do need an elite ball user.

I wonder if our D50 kicking looks bad (relative) because we've slower through the midfield than most of our opposition, that means we are forced to kick closer to leading players and their opponents than we would like, or further away from a preferred target than they can reliably close.

After an apparent shaky start, no issues with Haynes. Very reliable. Dunno about crediting Austin for that pick up.

Austin gets the blame if any additions to our list don't meet expectations so he has to get the credit for any that work out.  Wright hadn't signed up when we took Haynes  :)

Austin and his team have to be all over every free agent and out of contract player.  They must have felt that Haynes met a need, and they were right.

I meant it would have been someone other than Austin in the team but I take your point and its fair enough.

Fair points LP....I dont have confidence in Haynes kicking under pressure, I know his overall DE% stat reads decently but there is an awkwardness about him I dont trust in big moments.

I agree, Austin hasn't been too bad, fans are disappointed in the results but I'm not sure it's being driven by a list problem or list decisions.

Further when you cut fan favourites like Chugga you always tend to get a bit of residual stick.

Sometimes you need a type and that type just isn't available through draft or trade, so you have to make do.

Lets not get excited with Austins performance based on picking up Haynes. His list management has been disastrous in (a) addressing needs that he been evident for years and (b) placing our contracts and salary cap in a position to be in the market for elite players that can address our problems quickly (eg like Haw did with recruiting Barrass and Battle to immediately boltster their defence).

Stats can lie. You can get your % up by constantly switching play backwards to an unmarked team mate.
The important stat is hitting a team mate through the middle to set up an attacking play forward.
Only the elite defenders can do this consistently.

You can cut fan favourites but have to be prepared for criticism when they do very well for their new team and when its under the premise getting rid of him will make us so much quicker in the midfield? Id say we look as slow if not slower than when we had him on the list.

Even if true it's really only due to injury.

Cotters is one of the first that comes to mind.  Walsh is also no slouch even though he isnt express.

Missing newman and cowan terribly here too.

The names im mentioning here are not speed demons but they are quicker than quite a few playing in the ones in similar roles.

Who do we have injured that is quick?...

Harry McKay, Jagga Smith, Matt Cottrell and Sam Walsh.  The latter two because of their ability to cover a lot of territory very quickly.
