AFLW 2025 Rd 7: Carlton vs Fremantle at home

This Friday we play Freo at home at 17:05.
It looks like we're losing Mimi Hill to injury, but gaining Abbie McKay. Gab Pound also looks to be finally fit after a long injury layoff.

Our line-up:

B:   1 Amelia Velardo   36 Ciara Fitzgerald
HB:   49 Madeline Hendrie   7 Poppy Scholz   21 Harriet Cordner
C:   19 Erone Fitzpatrick   25 Keeley Sherar   17 Dayna Finn
HF:   16 Breann Harrington   55 Sophie McKay   4 Keeley Skepper
F:   42 Tara Bohanna   13 Aisling Reidy
R:   12 Jessica Good   10 Mimi Hill   20 Lily Goss
Int:   23 Lila Keck   3 Darcy Vescio   15 Meg Robertson   18 Madeleine Guerin   24 Brooke Vickers
Em:   22 Mia Austin   14 Siofra O'Connell   37 Maddison Torpey

We're probably favourites. We didn't take the risk of playing Abbie McKay or Cab Pound, but they won't be far away.
Nice to see Meg Robertson get a full game.

No idea who has the wind, but scoring has been hard so far.
Mimi Hill!
Sophie McKay! A good little period!

Quarter time:
Carlton 2 - 1 - 13
Freo:1 - 0 - 6
Apparently, we had the ball living in our forward half, but couldn't score. That sounds familiar.
No idea which side had the wind, but it sounds like it wasn't making the game easy.

Dockers had more of the ball, mostly handballs, but only 1 inside 50, so we probably had the wind. :(

We're kicking against the wind this (2nd) quarter.

What a goal from Ronnie!

That's the way to counter a wind disadvantage  :)

Carlton 5 - 2 - 32
Freo: 3 - 5 - 23

Any win is a good win with conditions to unpredictable.
Freo had 3 of the top 4 possessions getters, but a lot of their possessions were handballs. We had 241 possessions to Freo's 279.
However, our efficiency in disposal was considerably better.

We killed Freo in the taps, but Freo had more clearances than we did. I guess we missed Abbie McKay.
Carlton 53 marks to Freo 36, although Freo had 8 marks inside 50, while we had just 1.
Dayna Finn had another excellent game: 26 disposals.
Keeley Sherar had 23 disposals and 10 tackles!

Very sloppy game to watch presumably due to the conditions and Freo played them tight.  Good win by the girls, they looked spent at the end.

I thought Freo were the better team overall on the night but we took our chances. I didn't think our forwards gelled this week as a unit. While the general kicking has improved over the years it is still the big weakness in the women's game which is why Darcy Vescio is such a weapon. She is the one player at the Club, men and women, who can actually kick the ball.
The knock on boys when growing up was 'he played like a girl' but the women's game is contested and hard and one of continual tackling. There are times I wish our mens team would play like girls.
Our midfield will work better when Abbey McKay returns.
Good support for Freo at the game and I think the Carlton team is worth getting behind. At five and two we should make the finals but still need to win a couple more games.

Kicking in the AFLW has improved considerably, both in terms of distance and accuracy, but you would be hard-pressed to find a player who can kick as naturally and effectively with either foot as Darcy.  That ability to swing on to her non-preferred side and hit a target or go for distance is invaluable.
