AFL Rd 17 2026 Pre Game Predictions Carlton vs Richmond at MCG

Saturday night, 4th July, at 19:35 at the MCG.
We owe Richmond a pounding or two. It is time we collected.

I think Rich will trouble us more than WC did today. I hope the trend of taking every opponent seriously every week irrespective of where they are on the ladder continues. If we take them lightly or treat them with contempt, we will do so out our peril.
2021-Pi$$ or get off the pot
2022- Real Deal or more of the same? 0.6%
2023- "Raise the Standard" - M. Voss Another year wasted Bar Set
2024-Back to the drawing boardNo excuses, its time
2025-Carlton can win the 2025 AFL Premiership

Indeed, Richmond have played their best football against us for the last couple of years, much to my irritation. I don't want us to take them lightly, but I do want us to give them a day they want to forget.

Pitto has struggled against Nankervis in the past, and we have not much of a plan B for that situation. Also Richmond will have Lynch back, and he won't kick that badly again.
If Weitering were playing, Lynch wouldn't get a kick, but Weitering isn't going to play. Dean and Derksen will need to be on their game!

As good as Dean and Derksen have been, I'd imagine Lynch would monster them.

Not wanting to slip another banana peel under us this week, but our MCG form this year has been average.  Even in this 6-game streak, we were lucky to beat a badly-undermanned Essendon 3 weeks ago.

With two big matches after this one, it might be a good time to find some MCG form.

This is now the longest premiership drought in the history of the Carlton Football Club - more evidence of climate change?

Mm, if Lynch starts any of his shenanigans and Deano is on him, let's just say... Can you still win the Rising Star if you've been reported and found guilty?

Remember that Lynch is an expert at getting frees through sneaky stuff. Be a handful for either Deano or The Derk.

This game worries me - we have really played shot against Richmond lately and they would love nothing more than to stop our winning streak.

But - i think we have it in the bag, and easily. We have some tough players now, including the new young ones and recruits who were not in form in out first game.

I think we win by 10 goals.

Lynch? Dean is undersized physically, Derk is undersized height wise. There's a tall backman with good size who has been performing well in the twos. Is he our break glass in a case like this???

Yep, TC. In terms of effort, endeavour and spirit Deano and The Derk would give their all... but... the physical size of Lynch would be too big an ask. But if Young comes in, who goes out? Maybe Iso is given a rest, and The Derk goes forward? Be interesting to see what the MC does with this conundrum.

If we win clearances and keep the ball moving forward with some efficiency it will / should take care of itself.

This week won't be easy at all, fans thinking that Nthmond are lowly will be surprised by the pace they have around the footy, and that pace basically matches up well with our current game style.

I’m not sure where the notion that Derksen is “undersized” comes from.  He’s 194cm according to some sources and 197cm according to others.  Either way, he’s around the same height as Dean and Weiters and considerably heavier than Dean. He’s also a good judge of the flight of the ball and an excellent mark, hence his imposing tally of intercepts. It’s his lack of experience that would put him at a disadvantage when playing on Lynch.  Of course, Dean is less experienced, and less mature, but that hasn’t stopped him taking some decent scalps.

I’m not particularly concerned about Dean or Derksen playing on Lynch, or Young for that matter.  It’s our team defence that will limit Lynch’s opportunities.

Dean has the mind set and attitude to play on Lynch, he doesnt have the strength or physique...yet.

Lynch is too much of a sniper, he likes smashing the defender in front, reminds me of Matthew Lloyd, both timid when forced to take the front position.

It's why I rate and hate Jack Riewoldt more than both of them, because he went hard at the footy under any circumstance, which just made me hate him more! Blokes like Sticks, Plugger, Dunstall, Brereton, Maclure, they wore as much as they gave out, no shirking. Was that stupid, maybe, but it earns respect.
