AFLW 2026 Qualifying Final Carlton vs North Melbourne at home

Not much determined as yet, but we've made it to the QF. Granted it is against North, who've been playing a lot better than we have of late. But we are there!

Our line-up:

B:   21 Harriet Cordner   49 Madeline Hendrie
HB:   8 Lily Baxter   36 Ciara Fitzgerald   14 Siofra O'Connell
C:   19 Erone Fitzpatrick   20 Lily Goss   17 Dayna Finn
HF:   55 Sophie McKay   7 Poppy Scholz   25 Keeley Sherar
F:   35 Nell Morris-Dalton   3 Darcy Vescio
R:   12 Jessica Good   10 Mimi Hill   5 Abbie McKay
Int:   6 Gabriella Pound   11 Yasmin Duursma   1 Amelia Velardo   26 Tayla McMillan   2 Lauren Bella
Em:   24 Brooke Vickers   13 Aisling Reidy   23 Lila Keck

[1] Hendrie and Good are good 'ins'. Lila Keck ... not quite 100%? On the other hand, we'll miss Whitfort, who has been very good this year.

[2] North are huge favourites: it would be nice to ruin their parade! Can't see it: we're not playing anywhere near our best of late.

[3] Our depth: we don't appear to have as much depth as some of our foes. We do miss Bohanna as a key forward. Not sure what is going to happen with her.

In all honesty, we are better off not winning this one.

Even if we beat them now, we'd come up against them in the Grand Final anyway and would try and catch lightning twice.

Better yet, we try a few things, but get through the game unscathed. Save some things up our sleeve for the Grand Final rematch should we get there.

It is about our best lineup possible.

Maybe Tayla McMillan swapped out for someone else.
Bohanna must surely be done with. Not even on the emergency list.

If that's the case...
Women's football is a completely different game....at this point.
You would never see a men's game let through to the keeper at a senior level to keep your powder dry for the Grand Final. :o

None of this strategic losing garbage in case you can only beat them once.

Thats a losers mentality.   Winning is winning.  If you can beat them now, you can beat them in the big one. If you cant win now, the belief in the final may not be there.

Agreed, you never strategically lose, it will burn a winning culture once you start picking and choosing when to try. Sends all the wrong signals to the existing list, and kicks mud in the face of sponsors who support you financially and support staff who volunteer precious time and resources.

For the very same reason you should never throw games for draft lotto, because it burns the bird in hand for just a hope of future good fortune.

I'm not sure how you could deliberately lose a game of footy.  The coach could deliver an uninspiring address, bench the better players and play others out of position, but the players are still going to try their hardest.

To suggest it, hint about it, try it or even mange to do it are all very different things to proving it or taking the credit.

btw., Quite possibly the cultural damage might already be done once some match day official has hinted at such a concept.

I doubt anyone would get someone like Fagan on board!

OK clearly people misunderstood what i was saying.

I'm not saying we don't try and win it, but i'm saying lets not show all our hand to do so.
Leave some cards up our sleeve.

eg......If we've been training Good as a key forward, and can use that as a 'cheat' to get us a couple goals on a poor matchup. Do we show that card now, and give Kangas a few weeks to come up with a way to counteract that? We're better off saving that element of surprise for a Grand Final.

Or lets put it this way. The move to play Diesel in the FP in the 95 grand final. IIRC, he didn't know about that until the week of, if not the day of. Imagine we did that earlier in the year. People could come up with a plan ahead of time. Instead, he wins a Norm Smith because they had no answer for it.

I guess the problem with that line of thinking is this...
If we do keep a few things up our sleeve and don't throw everything at them, it is probably on the cards we won't get the chance to show our cards.
We just wont be there.

There are examples in the men's comp of clubs coming back from a qualifier loss to beat the same team in a grand final.
I'd bet those losses weren't part of a grand plan...but rather just taking a few lessons  from the initial loss and working on them.

I'll take that bet Lods. Albeit, not from a qualifier loss, but rather a late season meeting.

I know its happened, from a player who went through it. Not from our club though.

A move that could've been made, wasn't made, deliberately, because they wanted to keep that move should they face them in the finals, which they did, and it worked. They turned it around, GF was won in part due to that.

You'll have to be a bit more specific.
Player and the move.
It shouldn't be a huge secret if it's already occurred.

If we know that, we can better judge the extent to which such a move actually aided the winning of the Grand Final.

It seems pretty risky to me that if they had a plan thaty they thought was a game changer they didn't use it in the first game.
My guess would be that it may have been discussed, dismissed as too risky, but when the opportunity came and a trigger needed to be pulled they made the throw of the dice with no certainty it would come off.

Which is a completely different situation to actively holding back a move they were confident would work.

(Edit: If your talking about a home and away game, rather than a qualifier, that's a completely different story. I'm sure those sort of tactics would be used or withheld for later ,when games really mattered, quite often.)

At this stage of the year it has to be all out effort (and moves)...or there may be no tomorrow.

I've mentioned it on here before. TBH, i can't recall the specifics, but it was Demons vs Dogs the year the Dees won a flag.
They played eachother late in the year, dogs getting up by 20 points in a game that didn't matter to the dees. They met again in the GF and the dees ran away with it after half time.
A mate of mine sponsored one of the dees players (no longer on their list) and they used to have regular catchups and used to get good inside info. He was not the player in question, but spoke about the thinking throughout the year, specifically that game leading into finals and knowing they would most likely play again.
