Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Toughening up the princesses?
Speaking of toughening up, I notice Matt Thomas is an unrestricted free agent... got the kind of hardness we need and no doubt would love being back home rather than stuck in 1985.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Baby Blues vs. Frankston at Frankston on Sunday
Colder than a politician's promise at Frangerland this arvo. Worst grandstand, in terms of visibility, in the known universe.

Franger won 16-8 to NBs 13-13.

We lost this game in the first half with what could only be described as woeful disposal and decision making... handed them goals, easy goals, silly goals.

We really didn't look likely until Buckley copped an elbow to the head which fired up the side. We should have won as we really did dominate the game in most respects just way too many terrible errors in the first half. Our tackling and pressure on the opponent from late in the 2nd qtr onward was really good... forced them into plenty of errors.

Buckley - in everything. Showed his class with some good run and great snap goal. The boy is quick and I amazed that his skinny legs can kick a footy so far!
Levi - presented well and clunked a few. Worked hard in the ruck but made some really dumb decisions in front of goal trying to snap across his body. Like most of his mates, got better as the game progressed.
Casper - busy and worked hard on the ball.
Boots - really good. If not for his defensive work it could have been very ugly. Wish he'd back his judgment at times and mark rather than spoil.
Graham - got caught a few times today as Franger seemed to really sit on him... still got lots of the aggot and seldom wasted a disposal.
Marcon, Gianfagna, Lambert, Bransgrove and Wilson - these Preston boys really did work hard and showed some of the CFC boys -- especially early -- how to work hard. Wilson almost single handedly kept us in the game early on.
ROK worked hard but hasn't got his touch back yet... just good to see him get another game under his belt. At least, especially early, his kicks to position hit a team mate on the chest.
Warnock - did some good things but failed to deliver what he should. Visser replaced him in the last quarter and did better!
Bell - reminds me a little of Robbo in terms of disposal... just blazes away at times and even when he intends to kick it to a team mate it can go anywhere. Still too rough around the edges for mine.
Mitchell - took a couple of marks but was generally a waste of space. Could see him working harder but just fails to impose himself on the contest and does not take marks he should. As RR has mentioned, he just fails to get off the ground when contesting for a mark. He got some good delivery but failed to capitalise.
Davies - solid in defence.
Temay - did some very good things later in the game ...starting to show what folks have talked about. His size worries me though, just too small.
Menzel - has that freakish edge and has a defensive game! Flashed in and out of the game but what he did had class (except for one horrible shot on goal).
Joseph - liked his game and along with Bootsma, was one of our much better defenders.

Duigan (susp) and Laidler did not play.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Channel your anger
I think it is a poor show when a Coach attacks his players - as Mick did last night!
What he might say to them in private is one matter, but to be critical publically reveals he has lost it.
He ought to apologize
What would happen if players criticized the team selections?

I think it's a great when Mick criticizes his players publicly. We do it on this forum and for me, Micks public criticism informs us that he is seeing what we are. If any one should apologise, it's the players like Murphy, Betts, Yarran, Gibbs, Rowe etc. that didn't put in and were a disgrace to themselves and the club.
If players criticized team selections, they would get dropped. And deservedly so. That's what would happen.

I want blokes playing for our club that give 100%, 100% of the time, not a pack of Primma Donnas that can't cop a public bake from their coach.

Exactly.

Were were truly outed tonight......outclassed, outgunned, outplayed, outrun, outtackled etc etc.
Start preparing for next year boys, this one's gorrn! Some of you will surely be gorrn from CFC too.
A lot of home truths established tonight.

Right, succinct and true. Now we know how ordinary we are/where we really are. 10-12th would be our ladder position. Even if we fluked a finals appearance, we would only embarrass ourselves.

"they were harder & more desperate"

"they belted us through the middle"

"we got absolutely nothing from our small forwards"

"they are a Top 4 team and it clearly shows the gap between us & the Top 4 teams"

"I can't think of any of our midfielders who would be in the Top 6 players in the match"

"we need a massive improvement on tonights performance, we'll just worry about the Bulldogs next week and not the other games"

Malthouse being interviewed by Richo post-match.

Reckon MM put the Fluffy Ducks game down to an aberration... now he knows he's inherited publicity hungry & savvy girls.

When M. Watson becomes your big forward hope... oh, dear...

...the captaincy responsibility is killing Murph... just about everyone on this site knew that (Murph is not a Skipper), how come our club did not know that? This is infurating.  >:( >:( >:(

I would favour burying this season and getting games into Graham, Menzel, Buckley, Bell, Casboult, Warnock & O'Keefe.

Tonight we met an undermanned D1ckers unit, on our dung heap and they pulled down our dacks.

But, nothing to worry about... our President said we have a great list.

Forget finals.

MM, stop making excuses and painting an optimistic view of progress. This side will not deliver you a top 4 result or better.

Time to be ruthless at the trade and assistant coach table.

As for on-field leadership... >:( :( >:( :( >:( :( >:( :( >:( :( >:( :(

But the problem remains (mainly) between our ears because some weeks we do turn up?

You are right, but, when we experience bona fide defensive pressure, we go to water... and that is about culture/personnel. :)

Seeing as we're going down memory lane, I bought my first cassette player in Papua New Guinea in 1972 and one of the few decent cassettes I could buy was Chain's "Towards the Blues".

While I was out scrambling up and down the highlands, one of my comrades, who had been 'casevacced' with a 'sore ankle', was lazing in the Lae barracks and playing 'Black and Blue' over and over until he wore out my cassette.  Every time I hear 'Black and Blue' I think about humping a 25 set radio through the New Guinea highlands  :)

DJC... Black & Blue is one of my all time faves. Matt Taylor... Chain...now we're talking.

The great J J Cale has passed away at only 74 years of age.  :(

If only some of our younger folks understood the impact this dude had on music, including his influence on some of the big names in music. RIP JJ... you are a music giant.

Funny how songs trigger memories. Whenever I hear 'After Midnight' I'm right there as a junior sailor heading out of Sydney heads for Asia (2SM was piped throughout the ship).

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rd 19 - Carlton vs Fremantle (Pre Contest Conundrums)
We have some players in the best form of their careers- Simmo, Tuohy, Walker, Hendo. Yet we have a midfield that really has been an achilles heal against the good sides this year. Murphy, Judd, Carrazzo- our offensive midfilders have been ordinary. Gibbs was good early, but he is just 'another player' in our side. Gibbs has not even got close to his 3rd season in terms of SC points and is currently averaging 11% lower than his 2009 season. His SC points have slipped consistently and his output is no different to his output last year. His first game of the year has been his best, and has not even got close to those SC points since. ie. he showed us what he can do in that game, but like his whole career, he has not delivered it consistently in 2013.

At Etihad, without Pavlich, we are 4 goals closer, but we really cannot carry the passengers that we had against the Suns. Our bottom 3 players had less SuperCoach points than the Suns worst performer. That in a 7 goal win is pretty poor (The bottom 2, Rowe and Lucas, played all or a significant part of the game). Judd's decline is interesting. Last year, his average SC points dropped by 10% from the year before and this year it has dropped a further 5%. We all know that SC points are not an exact science, but I think this analysis reflects what we are all seeing from him. Three games ago, judd was superb- but in terms of SC points, it was an anomally, 15% higher than his previous best this year and 37% better than his average. To put that into persective, he had four higher scores than that game (saints) last year, 5 better games in 2011 and 7 better games in 2010. An indication that the best of Judd is far behind and we can only really expect one other 'vintage' Judd game this year.

Murphy is an interesting one. He is 20% down on his output last year, and surprisingly, he actually came back better after the Dangerfield bump (based on SC points). However, his last 2 games against GC and St Kilda last year were well down and that form (average SC) has continued into this year. Murphy has only scored SC points that matched his average last year against Essendon, Port Adelaide, Melbourne and Geelong. He has scored his lowest scores of his career this season against the Saints and and Collingwood. Even worse than his first year.

Robbo is another, 15% down on last year. Ed is up about 8%, but is a defensive midfielder. Brock is down almost 20% too. So all in all, our midfielders are down by an average of 10-15%.

What this all means is that we can not rely on Judd anymore and for some reason, our other gun midfielder is struggling. We need Judd to meet his average (100 SC is still a good output), but we clearly need Murphy to up his output by 20% this week. What it also shows, is that we probably need to start introducing more offensive midfielders who are going to rack up some possessions. Bell and Graham have not collected less than 30 possessions in the last 4 games that they have played in the VFL. These are the types of players that we require now. We need our hands on the pill in the middle, not simply limiting the opposition's midfielders.

Bell and/or Graham need to come in this week.

Good post...I'd like the bigger frame of Bell in the team, reckon Graham could wait for an easier game to debut in.

Agree... good post and we need bigger, stronger bodies against the D1ckers, but let's not sacrifice our speed... this mob will be worried by our speed. Dinger and Casboult in. Rowe out and ? out.
