This is a hobby-horse of mine.... It happens to Crippa so often it is not funny. "Tagger" takes his eyes off the ball and hugs Cripps at every opportunity before the ball is even bounced. Or sits on him, and tackles him just a sec before he takes possession.
What makes the Swans worse is Grundy was doing it as well. Watch the replay. 1st Q, we were getting ascendancy in the middle. So, what do they do? Grundy starts mauling Pitto and King as the ball is bounced - he is grabbing them from accross the line and nto allowing them to jump at the footy. He got pinged for it twice - but probably did it 50 times
We know we rely on winning the clearances. So, Horse has 3 of his blokes hang onto our ruckman and 2 prime movers, before the ball is bounced. Give up 2 or 3 frees in the process. But, essentially stop our main avenue to score
Has been a Swans trait since Roos - push the rules right to the edge and get away with it 99 times out of 100. Roos invented tunnelling, holding players down in tackles to let the defence set up. Now Longmire has perfected the holding prior to getting the ball.... along with (as another poster mentioned) just kicking the ball off the ground in the middle of a pack (not sure what happened to kicking in danger, but it certainly doesnt apply to the fluffy ducks)

Last post by Milhanna13 -Was thinking much the same, but he hunts the pill and gets zero protection, the game the way it is being umpired is starting to reward the snipers.
I don't mind the tackling, but not when they just flop into the backs of Cripps and Walsh without penalty.
Generally BEFORE they take the ball, as well

Last post by WASurfer -If it's wet, our bigger bodied mids might have an advantage....will definitely need the likes of Williams, Owies, Fogarty and Fantasia (or Motlop) at the feet of Charlie and Harry.

Helps us IMO. They are quicker than us (most sides are!). We don't want a shoot out, we want a war of attrition. Better if it's wet.

Last post by bobby -I'm not averse to giving the removing the prior opportunity a go.
But I think we need to see it trialled before we make the change to determine how much of a difference it would make.
Just for a bit of fun I watched a quarter a few weeks ago and tried to 'umpire' it on the basis of get the ball and if tackled release it virtually immediately in a proper manner...no prior.
Of course it may very well have been my interpretation, but I only counted 4 occasions when it would have made a difference...when a free might have been paid.
I'm guessing it was probably a lot greater on the weekend
I wonder how much difference it would make to the game, but we won't know unless we trial it...with umpires a bit more accomplished than my good self
I'm open to trying it as well. I think when the ball is live we may see some kicking off the ground and fisting/paddling the ball forward. Shepherding may come back into the game (its not what it was these days) to give the guy trying to take possession a chop out.

Last post by Lods -The downside of using it in the VFL is the overall standard is lower. The conditions and the grounds are worse.
As a result, it would be 'uglier' than it would be at AFL level.
No doubt there would be a few issues, but it's better to trial it properly and see how it goes than to introduce it at senior level and then have to abandon it because of unforeseen problems.
