Basketball

The Aussies had a good, if nail-biting 90-89 win over China in the FIBA Asia Cup final, giving us a three-peat.

I’m not sure whether China could have fielded a stronger team but our squad was all up and comers and they certainly rose to the challenge, particularly after China blew out to a double digit lead.

Sydney Kings forward Jaylin Galloway won MVP for the tournament.

Josh Giddey has just signed a four year contract with the Chicago Bulls.

Recognition of his outstanding season.

Done well after being traded in by the Bulls. Been spending some time in Australia with Melbourne United players and coaches.
Interesting news in the local NBL with 5 time MVP Bryce Cotton obtaining citizenship allowing him to play for the Boomers. Been a long process but recently he obtained advice from those who assisted Mason Cox and it proved very useful after many years of trying.

Josh has also been playing in some scratch matches and took on Eddie Betts in a shoot out.  Eddie is a skilful basketballer, but he would probably excel at most sports.

Is travel still a rule in the NBA? 🙄

I've seen multiple videos on what is now considered a travel in the NBA. Based on the rules, you can basically run half way down the court without bouncing depending on how you run, step, gather. Its a joke.

Depends on the player, star players get the extra step if it looks good.
My favorite is the dancing feet when the pivot foot gets swapped..happening more out here in the NBL too.

Wemby took four steps without a dribble against the Bulls and with his giraffe legs, that’s half the court 🙄

I’ve been watching a fair bit of the NBA and I can’t recall a single travel call.  The NBL isn’t quite as bad but Andrew Gaze can’t hide his amazement at some of the blatant travels that are let go.

The WNBA is just as bad.  Caitlin Clark is a great basketballer but she travels every time she does a step back jump shot.

The NBA has been weak on travel for decades, anybody involved in NBL here will talk to you about it, they accept it but what is more bothersome is that the USA seems to get extra leeway at events like the Olympics. An associate of mine asserts it's more about lazy officiation and the TV broadcast.

I do get a bit of deja vu about this when I see what the AFL is trying to do.

The other call that has disappeared from the game is carrying the ball, happens all the time in the NBA and NBL but it's ignored. At junior level it's called in Australia but it's getting less and less as the NBA standards creep in.

I watched my oldest grandson's rep game last Friday and the refs must have called 20 carries, none of which involved the player's hand going under the ball or palming it.  They wouldn't have been called in any other game at rep or domestic level that I've watched over the last several years.  The refs also called a dozen or so moving screens.  A couple were line ball but the player's feet were set well before contact in most.  At least the refs were consistent and called them on both teams but it did disrupt the flow of the game.

Here's a typical selection of NBA travels ... and a couple were called:

I like the commentator's "I don't know whether he's going to the rim or Mississippi!"

Commentary was as entertaining as the travel calls, liked the double dribble at the end too....
I watch a bit of Euroleague BB and the officiating in that comp is far more strict on travels etc but it also leads to a lot of inconsistencies given the games are more strategic/defensive and lead to over reffing at times.
The NBL is probably a happy medium as it sits at the moment and our refs are very good in terms of consistency.
