Drop won't kick in until tanks are re-filled. All petrol currently in the sevo tanks has full excise paid.

People whinge about how much excise there is and whine when the cut isn't big enough.

Next if some economists are right in that cutting excise will increase inflation, hence interest rates - what's the reaction?

Short term I don't see it increasing inflation as fuel will still be expensive and it's not like it will generate a spending spree because average folk will still be out of pocket.

Businesses won't wear the extra fuel cost and will pass it on - everything costs more.

This is where the RBA seems to have no idea - people spend more on essential items not just buying 'stuff' and then increase rates hurting mortgagees and renters further.  The models that RBA need updating since at least Covid.

It's like arbitrage, they keep the price high when taxes fall delaying the cut, but when taxes rise the price rises instantly even though tanks are already full. They screw the punter both ways and blame politicians.

I'm not sure what the point of Albanese's "State of the Nation's petrol" message was last night.
We're all pretty aware of the consequences of the war.
Those with a bit of common sense are doing business as usual...realising there may come a time when we have to face some controls.
Those that aren't plugged in are stocking up on petrol and toilet paper.

An 'Address to the Nation' should probably be reserved for times when things are really dire
Most people aren't feeling that at the moment.
Petrol's a bit dearer than normal, but otherwise not much has changed, except there doesn't seem to be much Norco milk in the shops the last couple of days.

Rightly or wrongly an 'address to the nation' without a lot of substance at this time could suggest to some that the future may hold a few perils we're not being kept fully informed about.

He was sort of cornered into it.
If he didn’t he was leaving Australia rudderless and leaderless.
As you say Lods, there’s not really a lot he can do and even less he can do right now.
Let’s go BIG !

Speaking from my own circles, a lot of people are going through life with blinkers on Lods.

Most people are worried about fuel prices, but thats just one drop in the ocean of the supply chain.

Fertiliser supply is impacted.
Farming is impacted.
Food production is impacted.
Id wager food supply is impacted.
We havent gone into full DR planning, but my wife and I started stocking up on some non perishables that we can keep on hand in case food gets a bit hard to come by.  Nothing too over the top, some tins of salmon and tuna, and instant noodles, sweet corn, chopped tomatoes, and passata.  Some dried pasta, chickpeas, Lentils, Giant Beans, and Black Eyed Beans too.   I estimate we have a food supply that will last about 3 months (maybe a couple more if things get dire) in the event that food starts to get tough to get.

Thing is, it might not be difficult to get, it might just get expensive.  The inflationary impacts of this conflict wont be felt today, it will hit in a few months time, and thats what Albo was telling everyone.

Im no labor or liberal apologist, but a lot of my friends and family are too busy looking at the impact today, to worry about the impact tomorrow.  Some are still planning holidays, and others are worried about their day to day fuel costs.   The government cutting excise is a bit of a tell.  Ditto public transport.  There is a fuel crunch coming.  It may not be that bad, but the steps we take now to kick the can down that road are all just things that prudent planning will do and an absence of information will be filled by something, so better to get out there and say something that is somewhat reassuring.  Thing is, the information was short on detail, but thats likely because they actually dont know for sure how badly everything gets impacted yet.

Agree, Albo has been hammered in Parliament question time as has Chris Bowen who has been forced to update everyday on the amount of Servo closures in regional areas and the effect on farmers and future food supplies etc and its a bit of pre budget damage control too.
Reality is there isnt anything that can be done and Trump controls the timeline...

That's the danger...
Was that message really needed at this time or when people really start to get affected.

My BIL is a farmer.
I was speaking to him last night.
He's fine for petrol and has more petrol and fertilizer coming shortly.

On another note though
Albanese looked like Marc Antony or Martin Luther king in comparison to the rambling bit we just saw from Donald Trump.

Why did the price go up as soon as the bombing started?
