Our state is now completely out of control regarding serious crimes in particular stabbings and home invasions.
Crime is an issue everywhere, the trick is to read a balanced news service and not be sucked in by the media biases.

It's easy to think it's overly bad in your own backyard, because it's your own backyards news that the algorithms push to you, and that makes people paranoid.

A great example of this bias is the reporting / non-reporting about some of the current One Nation candidates. One in particular is being reported by media almost all over the country for a pretty nefarious history, cults, weird practises, etc., etc., etc., except in their own state where they are noticeably absent from the media reporting. That's media bias not reporting.

I've mentioned before, multiple times, if you want a less biased view open a browser tab in "private mode" before searching, it's shocking just how different your news feed will become!

I still think things are no where near worse than it used to be, we just have more access to information about these things thanks to CCTV, and more people having a phone camera handy, but I dont have data to back that up.

Even so, I suspect the data would be a bit of hit and miss regarding this assertion, as many historic crimes may have been unreported due to a lack of evidence.

I'm pretty sure the sentiments would be pretty much the same in every state.
Everyone would see their own region being on a downward spiral.

"Things are so much better on the law and order front than they used to be".... is something you wont hear often.

Of course it all scales with population as well.

I recall seeing some Federal Bureau of Statistics data a year or two back that showed an almost direct correlation between the size of a state population and the amount of crime, it's probably still on MyGov somewhere.

Of course @Thryleon makes a good point about media coverage, although I doubt evidence really makes any difference, maybe on the conviction side it does, but the media do not need much "evidence" to report.

If you differentiate reported crime from convictions, it becomes an issue of statistical definitions, for example if someone is killed but there is no convicted murderer than would be no recorded conviction for a certain crime that was committed. That's an extreme example, but the same applies at all levels of crime.

You may 'think' something but its not based on facts.

Its not hard to look it up - there is no denying it - the crime increase is highest levels in our history.

I have several members in the family that have been in the force for 3 decades plus. Talk to one of those and they will tell you how it is on the street within any bias

And yes it's not only Vic that has inherited this problem.

Both of you are correct, Thry and Shawny.  Crime reporting used to be in the 'Waverley Gazette/Leader newspapers' and then the Neighbourhood Watch newsletter - local and late!

Now with the prevalence of footage, it is much more visible and seemingly brazen - and with clickbait, often in a different state.  However, there is little doubt that violent and destructive crime (tobacco shops etc) is increased. While had to compare with 30+ years ago (partly due to different crimes having different criteria), it would be interesting to know crimes per 100,000 of population.  Not really sure what it would achieve, though.

Victoria's Crime Statistics Agency provides pretty comprehensive data that's easy to access:

The problem I have with state based reporting is different state to state rules and definitions, for years we've heard one state is better than another, but when the Fed's published the report I recall crime followed population.

A friend of mine in the Vicpol force was "lured" to Qld by better pay and conditions, when he got there he said certain crime was worse than Vic but the stats don't show it!

Here in Queensland we're hearing exactly the same complaints as being expressed down South.
"It's out of control, especially youth crime"
It's not a Victorian thing alone and is a challenge for all governments.
And a change in government won't be a quick fix.

Yeah I remember fondly back in the day riding dirt bikes around in groups in the middle.of the road, having sword fights after school and car shopping in Brighton on the weekend. Great times.

Some of these things can be explained away by population movement.
Suburbs that were once like MBB just described above change significantly over time as population groups move around.
If you visited some of the western parts of Sydney back in the 60s you'd probably have seen a fair bit of lawlessness.
Those suburbs are now the quiet family places.
Other once quiet suburbs now have issues.

It may be that tells part of the story as these things hit closer to home.

Ubiquitous technology plays a big part, communications, transport, everything is easier, easier to coordinate, easier to run, easier to get bored, easier to buy drugs.

My friend in Qld tells me the youth crime drug situation appears a bit worse in Qld than Vic, but it's mostly petty crime, drug offenses, domestics, etc., etc., and the reporting requirements are different. He also said there is a much higher incidence of crimes of opportunity like pick pockets and fraud due to the tourism economy and transient population.

The really serious criminal stuff scales with and follows the population and is the same everywhere, the more people the more money the more opportunity for crooks.

There was a lot of gang violence in the 80's and 90's that didnt hit the news.  More urban legends and myths than not, but fights near train stations were common place.

You reckon those things got reported to the police?

Yep  - we used to ride our pushies home once the street lights turned on without a care in the world.

Played kick to kick on the road during footy season with neighbors - then cricket down the driveway with the bin as stumps during cricket season.

Innocent, free and safe.

Worst thing you saw was a fist fight to settle the more serious disputes and as soon as someone was losing it was broken up then shook hands and on went- very different these days sadly
