Some reflections on what will be my favourite H&A game for the 2026:

[1] Pitto was murdered in the ruck. But did that stop him? Not in the slightest. He may not have won the taps, but he made Draper's and Fort's ineffective. He often sharked the hit out himself. he had 6 clearances and helped our mids stop Brisbane's avenue to goal.
His tackle early in the game really showed that we were on.
As the game went on, he started to get more taps himself.
Pitto had a big night. We really missed him when he was out.
For that matter, Lewis Young showed similar intelligence when it was his turn to ruck. He didn't get a lot of taps, but he sharked more than a few and made it hard to the Brisbane mids to get their hands on the ball.
Both guys really stood up tonight.

[2] Jagga Smith must win the Rising Star:
He may have won the Robert Walls medal, but I think George Hewett was better. But that was irrelevant. Jagga is a guy in first season of football, and he really stood up. He had 29 possessions, kicked goals, made tackles, got clearances, and not just the crap we had a few weeks back, but real burst out of the centre clearances. And he will probably get better with experience and a bit more muscle.

[3] Our defence:
If there was one area we were supposed to be ordinary in, it was our back half. We were missing Weitering, Newman, O'Farrell and more, yet our guys not only did the job, they slaughtered one of the most vaunted attacks in the game. Harry Dean ... what can you say? He played like his life depended on it. he played on a couple of big names and kicked more goals than they did combined. Wade Derksen had 18 possessions and 11 marks; he was excellent, playing with poise. His marking was excellent. Billy Wilson did his job well. Ollie Florent has got better as the season has gone on, he was brilliant tonight. His kicking was excellent and set things up. Haynes and Cowan didn't have huge nights, but they did their jobs with aplomb. Both set up goals with their efforts. Lewis Young also spent some time in defence and didn't screw up once. And he also kicked straight, for a change. We can't be dropped after a game like that.
And the way our guys chased and tackles ... I loved it. Brisbane had one more tackle than we did, but Dunkley had 9 of them. Take that out and they it doesn't read well. And Brisbane don't tend to tackle much because of their ball movement. We had the fewest tackles we've had in ages, because we had the ball and moved it efficiently.

[4] Brodie Kemp:
He is very much a confidence player and his confidence has been awfully down. getting those two early goals turned his game around. Not only was he supplying goals for others, but he felt confident to kick them himself.
How do we get him to play this way every week? I don't know, but he embarrassed the Lion's defence.
That he wasn't #1 forward probably helped: H took the key defender (and won that battle comfortably). Mitch was down a bit, but had some moments of true magic!
Live Long and Prosper!

Start of the year I think I posted something about not relying on kids like Smith and Dean lol.

Yep i basically said the same thing.
I was happy with the kids coming through but it would take at least a year, probably 2.

I don't think anybody dreamed that jagga would be a lock for the rising star and dean is a clear podium finisher as well.

Bit of a perfect storm for us last night.

- All the young kids played out of their skin.
- kemp shed his kicking yips
- harry started holding his marks
- we were super accurate with the ball innfront of goal (and largely around the ground)
- lions copped some in game injuries
- brisbane threw up their hands and claimed 'too hard' for the second time this year..... only effort worse was against gws

Hopefully we didnt use up all our luck and/or favours this week and have some left for the saints next week.

A confident Brisbane came for a shootout and were outgunned. Very happy for the boys as it has been a roller coaster for a while now and we have set ourselves up for the end of the season.

Brisbane were under manned in defense too.  They played hipwood as a defender out of necessity.   P I t Gardiner in and wonder how it changes.

Still a fantastic effort.

One of the best four quarter efforts we've seen in recent memory.
The opposition were depeleted at the end, but 'resistance was futile'
They were overwhelmed.
A real 'team' performance on our part...and they looked like they were enjoying it all the way through the game.

If the players were keen to help Fraser make up his mind they definitely gave him a 'thumbs up' ;)  :D .

A bit late getting home from a day out so missed Q1 but I was thrilled with the rest of the game. We pretty much completely dominated. They tried to turn the tide but we were resolute and completely dominated in the end with our youngsters looking great. The coaching selection panel has much to consider. 😎
Reality always wins in the end.

A gentle reminder from Chris Fagan's press conference: based on the form ladder of the last 11 weeks, we are 2nd.

Over the years if Crippa has 18 touches we lose or struggle to win. Maturity and the emergence of Jagga & Co. to take responsibility and the workload in and around the ball. Love that Frase has mentioned a few times over the weeks that our experienced players and leaders also had to lift.

That's what mental toughness looks like. Ruthless persistence. 'Nice' Carlton has finally gone... RIP, and never come back. Our newbies aint choir boys and they're showing some of the experienced players how it's done. You push one of our bloke's face into the turf when he's on the deck, you take us all on. (You know the situation I'm especially referring to). Walshy is an experienced player who has this and is loving what the newbies are bringing, he'd feel supported.

With reward for effort -- hitting the scoreboard -- comes confidence. Maintains and builds connection from end to end.

6 gls each and every quarter. Holy mackerel.

However, it's now the past... A fantabulous memory. Love how Frase and some players already acknowledged that the Aints will be a completely proposition. Ross will do his homework. And so will we.
Only our ruthless best, from Board to bootstudders will get us no. 17

Kemp showed all the douters like me wrong and what belief and confidence can do.

Up to 30 goals for the year which for a third forward is a fair result.

Well done Kempy and great for him to hear the fans supporting him.

I don't agree, I think it was Pitto's best game for the season, and probably Young's as well.

Fans think losing the tap is losing the contest, that is far from the truth, it's a misnomer that results from putting too much faith in the stats.

The purpose of the ruck contest is to get the ball heading where you want it to go, where you have planned for it to go, even if that means having the opponent direct it to that general location. You can control the drop zone of the footy, so that it's falls in the place your team is expecting, and you do not need to actually tap the footy to have that happen. You just have to make sure the opponent taps it to where you think they will.

Shout-out to Walsh, since he extended his contract he's decided no more being passive, no more being bullied, no more being someone else'ss victim.

Sometimes, you just have to push back, and when you do that the bullies usually fold!

I don't want to be negative, it was a great win, but on this result don't read too much into the scoreline.

This time of year is the traditional heavy work-load period for teams embedded in the finals, they usually pound the training track 4 or 5 weeks out and start to taper from about 2 or 3 weeks out, to be cherry-ripe for the first finals.

It's a point of difference between teams struggling to make the finals and teams already there, and it could explain some of the apparent flatness from both Brisbane teams this weekend.

The only thing countering that, is the fact the Lions were quite lucky to defeat us the first time, as Fagan coach pointed out!

They had close to a full side for mine, those players missing dont make up a 76 pt deficit in my opinion.
