Canada can sell the idea to Alaska and Minnesota as cheaper drugs, better health care, better / cheaper education, better food, nicer neighbours, less crime, legalised weed, the best hockey teams, etc., etc., no Trump, Musk or Murdoch, I'm sure they'll get a bite! ;)

When you think about it, what has modern America got to offer those states to make it worth them staying, cheap crack and a monkey for your back? :o

Donny jr went to Greenland and there was an interview with a Greenlander who was quite happy for the USA to take over.  It turns out that he is a convicted drug dealer.  Coincidence?

Greenland has a very good, virtually free healthcare system.  They’re not going to swap that for a complicated, user pays Obamacare or whatever the crazy cooker who will be running health wants to put in its place.

The POTUS-elect is now a convicted felon but wasn't sanctioned.

Sadly, he will have a diplomatic passport and the conviction won't stop him travelling while he's POTUS.

If Trump goes ahead with his threat to take back the Panama Canal because it was a "bad deal", then sure ly it is reasonable for Russia to ask for the return of Alaska on the basis that receiving 2 cents per acre from the USA was also a "bad deal".

Also, under Trump's  "might is right" policy, it would be reasonable for China to take back Taiwan, and to take control of the South China Sea.

The upside for Australia is that we would not have to worry about trying to curb China's territorial ambitions in the future.

Macca....China wont be stopping at Taiwan, that will be a test to see if the USA and others do anything to stop them.
They will take other Pacific islands and want to clip the ticket of any vessel moving through their expanded Territories.
Same with Putin in Ukraine, if he wins and gets control it will be Moldova next and then other ex USSR states that were previously annexed.
I'm not a Trump fanboy but his unpredictability in global politics/military issues makes countries like China, Russia unsure and nervous about how they approach him which isnt a bad thing imho.
The Australian political landscape might change to a tighter more pro USA military approach if Dutton gets in and Im not sure thats the way to go either..

Probably the relevant question for us is what will Trump's attitude be to Australia?
The territories he talks of acquiring (or at least influencing) are all within America's sphere or 'zone'
Thy are in fact important to America's security, if nothing more than as potential for bases and buffer zones.
We're some way away.
We do have some significant strategic assets in terms of places like Pine Gap.

Trump is making noises about pulling away from Europe (unless they pay their way).
What would be his feelings about Australia if things, suddenly went a bit pear shaped in the Pacific?
How we handle the American relationship will be interesting whover wins our next election?

If any of Trump's threats to smaller sovereign nations come to fruition under the guise of defence of the USA, then we will enter a new phase of imperialism.

I see Trump taking the States back to the Fortress America attitude of the 30s leaving China and Russia to deal with their neighbours as they wish.

On another topic, I watched a recent Malcolm Turnbull interview relating to the AUKUS agreement.  He described the contract as the worst he had ever seen entered into by any Australian government and held the view we would never see one submarine delivered.

 One clause states that a submarine may be delivered provided the president at the time is satisfied that it is surplus to USA needs.

At present the US is making 1.2  submarines a year.  It needs to be making 2.4 a year to keep up with the US navy needs.  The current backlog is seventeen submarines.  To make enough submarines so that we get our first would require production to be boosted to 3.4 submarines a year.  I am not sure whether we have given 3 billion or 6 billion dollars to the US shipyards to boost production - whatever the amount Turnbull believes it's gone for good.

I think that it's the exact opposite.  Putin and Xi understand Aurangzeb and his transactionalist approach to everything.  Like most people he deals with, they'll be looking to cash in and they know that he doesn't have the cojones to stand up to them.

If China does follow Aurangzeb's cue card and annexe Taiwan, they are sure to want to move on the southern Japanese islands in order to control the South and East China Seas.

I'll agree to disagree, I think his transactional approach is over hyped much like his threats to bring in massive tariffs etc which were watered down and Id expect him to follow what his military advisors tell him most of the time unlike say Putin who takes the hands on approach with military matters and fecks up most of the time he tries moving the chess pieces.
Xi cant even control Kim Jong involving himself in Ukraine and making a mess of that and while Trump is no genius he doesnt have a lot to beat as long as he listens to the right advice of the people who do know what they are doing which i think he will.

That's the key.
We have to hope that the military leadership in the USA has a good understanding of the balance that needs to be struck....and can keep the lid on Trump.
They need to keep the faith with traditional allies and stand up to aggressors.
They've done it in the past.
Trump speaks of how they've talked him out of certain military actions during his first term.
We know Trump is only half arsed with his declarations of intentions.
He talks a big game and delivers on half of it.

How many military and intelligence chiefs and senior advisors resigned or were sacked during his last term?  Offering frank and fearless advice is a tank trap on your career path.

And his little mate Elon is already moving to scrap long standing military equipment development because he thinks there are cheaper options, despite considered military advice to the contrary  ::)

He's there to give himself a presidential pardon on the way out.

What he does between now and then will be to maintain the status quo.

No one rocks the boat and wins, and the president is a puppet anyway.  What he does now and the end of his term will leave a legacy about him and I reckon he'll stick to the basics.

Yep. As is my want, I take a somewhat psychological view. Malignant narcissists tend to destroy all around them before eventually destroying themselves... or  people finally waking up.

I was only thinking the other day about those around Trump from 2016... resigned, jailed, sacked... disgraced!! These narcissists are master manipulators at getting people to do, with a wink wink nudge nudge, what they would otherwise not do. And they're brilliant at giving themselves coverage through plausible deniability. Cunning as a sh*thouse rat.
